On Jan. 24, 2019, during a ceremony celebrating Florida Recycles Day at the Capitol, then Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Noah Valenstein announced the formation of a public-private partnership with the Flexible Film Recycling Group to bring its Wrap Recycling Action Program (WRAP) to Florida.
The initiative aims to build greater public awareness and participation in plastic film packaging recycling at grocery stores and other retail locations, as well as reduce the amount of film packaging inappropriately placed in curbside recycling bins.
The initial six-month pilot campaign includes the following nine counties:
The WRAP partnership also includes Publix Super Markets and additional retailers, municipalities, the Florida Recycling Partnership, Waste Management Inc. of Florida, and additional recycling processors and haulers.
“We are very pleased that Florida has become a WRAP partner,” said Shari Jackson, director of the Flexible Film Recycling Group. “WRAP will provide tools and best practices to support DEP’s community outreach and education efforts to increase the recycling of plastic film packaging.”
