Nearly 1,900 Mack, Volvo trucks recalled for accelerator pedal sensor issue | Overdrive

Trucking news and briefs for Monday, Dec. 4, 2023:

Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks each announced recalls that impact a total of nearly 1,900 trucks. Types Of Thermistor

In the affected units, the engine may not return to idle within two seconds if the accelerator pedal position sensor becomes disconnected.  As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."

Mack’s recall affects approximately 851 model year 2023-’24 Anthem, Granite, LR and Terrapro models. Volvo’s recall includes approximately 1,009 model year 2023-’24 VN models.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents state that an engine that does not return to idle quickly enough after the accelerator pedal position sensor is disconnected can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy to fix the issue is still under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Jan. 21, 2024.

Owners can contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177 with recall number SC0455, and Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586 with recall number RVXX2313.

Lode King Industries is recalling approximately 66 model year 2021-‘24 Prestige AHV42-2 hopper bottom trailers equipped with a lockable 2-speed gearbox in which an open and unlocked chute door may fall off while the trailer is in transit.

Lode King said these 66 trailers are all equipped from new with a lockable 2-speed gearbox to drive the chute doors and a stopper mechanism that prevents the chute door from coming completely out of its track.

“It has always been assumed that operators would close and lock these chute doors before venturing out onto a public roadway, the company said in recall documents. “We have recently learned of two incidents where the operator left the chute doors open and was able to defeat the stopper mechanism, thereby losing a door on the highway while in transit. This chute door is a large stainless steel plate that weighs in excess of 100 lb.”

Titanium Screw Dealers will install a safety decal beside the 2-speed gearbox, and remove and replace the stopper finger, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed this month. Owners can contact Lode King customer service at 1-204-325-4345. NHTSA’s recall number is 23V-794.
