5 Ways to Give Your Windows a Facelift

Are your current window furnishings dust ridden or lacking flair? With the warmer weather upon us, you’ll no doubt be opening these beauties up a lot more, so now’s the time to ensure they shine.

We caught up with interior stylist Emma Blomfield to seek her top tips on how to give your windows a facelift for the future.

It’s time to throw out the rule book and have a bit more fun with your furnishings. According to Emma, it’s a growing trend to turn to bold, colourful window furnishings to add interest and pattern to a room, as opposed to opting for one solid colour.

“It’s very on-trend to feature a sheer curtain underneath and a block-out curtain in front to control light levels – and increasingly people are featuring a block-out curtain with a print on it,” says Emma.

While plantation shutters are great for filtering light and dressing up your windows, Emma says they can be pricey. The good news is you can get a similar look with venetian blinds. What’s more, this type of furnishing can easily freshen up any bedroom, living area or office space.

Tip: Look for easy-to-clean venetians with wider slats that replicate the look of stylish shutters.

If you’re working with a tight budget, another accessible way to give your windows a facelift is to simply change the curtain rod. “By simply replacing your curtain rod with a newer one, you can refresh your window treatment easily,” says Emma.

Team this with both a sheer and decorative curtain and voila, style central.

A window film is a decorative film which you can apply to a window to create a less see-through effect. “It’s like a glaze, almost like a contact you’d use for contacting books,” says Emma.

It’s a relatively inexpensive option to update your windows – and when paired with an indoor blind, it can make all the difference.

If you don’t mind a bit of DIY, installing an indoor blind is a fairly easy job, too, says Emma. “If you have the right tools, such as a spirit level and drill, there’s no reason you can’t do it yourself.”

Repainting your window trims is an easy way to freshen up your windows in a flash, says Emma. Her words of warning though? “Use a satin gloss or a gloss paint for your window trims rather than a matte wall paint. You can use the same paint colour as your walls, but it must have a gloss or satin gloss finish. This will make the windows easier to wipe down if they get grubby.”

With the trims repainted, try mixing style with function by featuring a blind and curtain combo for your furnishings; you’ll maximise privacy and control light, while adding wow factor to the space.
