Though it’s a growing chain with more than 80 locations nationwide, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (501 King St.) has for years been the most highly frequented creamery in King Street’s entertainment district, bookmarked by Calhoun Street to the south and Spring Street to the north.
That steady popularity played a part in knocking New York-based Odd Fellows out of business after just 15 months and has deterred other scoop specialists from opening in the heart of the peninsula. (Off Track Ice Cream is an outstanding outlier to that trend.)
Despite having little food service experience, David Sullivan wasn’t thrown off by the success of Jeni’s, which added a second Charleston area location in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre at 1242 Belk Drive on July 13.
He did have a secret weapon, after all: liquid nitrogen, the key component of operations at Buzzed Bull Creamery. The mid-sized franchise has 13 open locations in nine states, including one of its newest at 595 King St. Suite 130.

Sweet cream-based and vegan ice creams are made to order using an automated nitrogen distribution system, said Sullivan, the franchise owner at Buzzed Bull Creamery Charleston. Patrons can create their own combination or choose one of Buzzed Bull’s specialties, like honey bourbon pecan or hard apple pie.
Did we forget to mention the shop also offers booze-infused treats? In addition, Buzzed Bull serves coffee, sorbet and cookies.
Suffice it to say that the new ice cream shop has been a hit since swinging open its doors in May.
“I’ve been busy every single night I’ve opened the place,” Sullivan said. “We can get 20 to 30 people deep waiting on ice cream.”
