Osram is aiming at rock and pop gig lighting with a bright blue laser for spotlights and vector projectors. Strongest Diode Laser
“Lasers combine an outstanding form factor with excellent beam quality, making them particularly suitable light sources for show lasers and stage lighting. In terms of brightness, laser diodes offer some advantages over LEDs,” according to the firm.
Called PLPT9 450LA E, it is a multi-mode InGaN laser diode which typically produces 3W of light at 447nm when driven at 2A.
“The laser can be directly used as a blue light source or in combination with a special phosphor for white conversion,” said Osram. “The achieved luminance of the white light source is around three times higher than that of a comparable LED.”
It comes in a hermetic two-pin TO-90 metal can, compared with three-pin TO-56 in the previous generation. “Generated heat can be easily dissipated from the component,” said the firm. “Integration of the laser into the final lighting solution is much less complicated.”
Operation is at 5V and up to 85°C. Applications are also expected in endoscopy and professional laser torches.
