SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Like many this time of year, Viel Guerra of Sioux Falls enjoys time outside even when it’s a little hazy.
“It doesn’t bother me as much,” Guerra said. “I still try to get out as much as possible, especially when the sunshine is out just because the weather here is so temperamental, and you got to take advantage of the sun and get that vitamin D in.”

Still, she says, there’s reason for some people to think about time inside when a smoky haze is hanging around.
“I would just caution, if you do have allergies or if you have any issues with asthma, to really consider staying indoors,” Guerra said.
Pulmonologist Dr. Paul Berger agrees.
“For those of us who do have like, asthma, COPD, bronchitis, chronic heart disease, children, pregnant women, those are the people who are at more at risk for developing a issue with your breathing or your cardiovascular system,” Berger said.
Berger says the haze can also impact someone who might seem to be the picture of health.
“It’s not the large particulate matter that you need to be worried about, it’s the other gasses and the very, very small particulate matter that can go into anyone’s airways, into the very, very small airways of the lungs, and cause inflammatory changes that can ultimately lead to shortness of breath, chest tightness, decreased aerobic ability,” Berger said.
