MDOT asks people to wear orange to support road worker safety – The Oakland Press

Lines painted on some freeway lanes are about to get a refresh.

Convoys of painting crews will be moving along I-75 and I-94 in Southeast Michigan starting Monday, April 22, to restripe faded pavement markings on freeways, including the edge lines and the lane lines separating lanes.

Each group will include three large orange trucks will have flashing lights and “wet paint” signs and travel at 8 to 12 mph.

MDOT officials caution drivers to avoid cutting between trucks as paint spraying can damage vehicles.

Michigan law requires slower speeds in work zones.  Drivers caught speeding in work zones face double fines and points on their driving records. Drivers who injure someone in a work zone crash face up to a year in prison. Drivers who hurt or kill a road worker face fines up to $7,500 and 15 years in prison. Last year at least 20 work-zone fatalities were documented, including two road workers. Hundreds more people suffered injuries in work-zone crashes.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) asks everyone to wear orange on Wednesday, April 17, in support of road workers and those who risk their lives to repair Michigan roads. This is National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.

Anyone joining MDOT’s “Go Orange” campaign is asked to share a photos on social media using hashtags #Orange4Safety, #GoOrangeDay and #NWZAW.
