Serving the Palo Alto community since 1986, Chinese restaurant Jing Jing Gourmet will close its doors on Sunday.

The restaurant serves Szechan and Hunan food, which are styles of Chinese cuisine that use spicy, oily and sour flavors.

Some of their popular dishes include wontons in chili oil and mu-shu pork, served with vegetables and Chinese pancakes, and special dishes like kung pao lamb and dry shredded beef, which is pan fried until crispy.

With rising costs of labor, ingredients and a change of commuter dining habits, restaurant owner Susan Tsai decided not to renew the lease after May, according to the Mercury News.

“Operating costs have risen and the rent is very high in Palo Alto,” said daughter of the owner, Julie Tsai.

As her mom ages, running such a large space has also become more difficult, she said.

Still, they hope to continue serving food.

“Although this location is closing, we hope to stay connected with you and our community. Stay tuned for potential new ventures in the future,” the restaurant owner wrote in a statement.

And as word spreads of their closure, the Tsai family welcomes community conversation.

“We’ve been in Palo Alto for 38 years and it’s been very memorable,” Julie said. “We’d love to see messages of support on Facebook.”

Jing Jing Gourmet is located on 443 Emerson St. in Palo Alto.

Oh, No!! So very sorry to read this news. One of our very favorite restaurants 🙁

Sorry to hear they are leaving this address but relieved there are plans for new venue. Jing Jing will be missed.

So bummed. We have been going there for years and getting takeout!
