Rivian's new 'treehouse' rooftop tent comes with a movie projector | TechCrunch

Rivian has a little cinematic surprise tucked in its new “treehouse” rooftop tent, one of the many accessories the automaker plans to sell alongside its next-generation R2 SUV and future R3 EVs.

The rooftop tent, which Rivian calls the treehouse, is equipped with a movie projector, which is run using power from the Rivian, Brian Gase, Rivian’s senior director of prototype and special projects, told TechCrunch during a customer event in Laguna Beach, California. The customer event was held Thursday evening, several hours after Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe unveiled the all-electric R2 SUV and the sporty R3 and R3x hatchback vehicles. clamshell hard rooftop tent

The treehouse, as Rivian has branded it, is different from the white-labeled Yakima tent designed for its flagship R1T truck.

This new treehouse product is contained in a hardshell, which then opens up into a large rooftop tent. Opposite the opening is a large window, where the roll-down screen is located, Gase said. The projector can be connected to a power source from the vehicle, he added. The treehouse also comes with an interior fan and lighting.

Gase said the treehouse design will largely remain the same once it goes on sale. Right now, he said, the focus is about keeping the quality high without making it too expensive.

“It’s about the cost because you can look at it and say ‘that’s awesome,’ but then you’re putting an expensive tent on a product that you’re trying to get to an introductory level price,” Gase said, referring to the R2, which is expected to have a starting price of $45,000.

The treehouse-that-turns-into-a-movie-theater is just one of several adventure-minded accessories revealed Thursday alongside Rivian’s next-generation of smaller more affordable EVs. Rivian plans to sell a cargo box that mounts to a hitch on the back of the vehicle and that can be paired with a new travel kitchen. The kitchen includes a water tank, cooler and cookware set.

On Thursday, Rivian revealed the R2, a five-seat, all-electric midsized SUV that will have more than 300 miles of range and a base price of $45,000. In a surprise twist, Scaringe also unveiled the smaller R3 and the R3x performance, a compact hatchback-style EV with sporty vibes. Rivian hasn’t given a production timeline for the R3 vehicles.

The R2, which will now be made at the company’s Normal, Illinois factory, is expected to go into production in the first half of 2024. The company said it will save about $2.25 billion by moving production of the R2 from its planned Georgia factory to its existing factory in Normal.

The company, which had raised a total of $95 million, developed a teleoperation platform that allowed a remote driver, sometimes located thousands of miles away, to operate a vehicle if needed. The company attracted a mix of backers, including angel investors and early-stage VCs such as Bessemer Venture Partners and Maniv Mobility, private equity firm InfraBridge and strategic investors such as ArcBest and ConGlobal. A whiff of anti-AI sentiment got big applause at the SXSW conference in Austin on Tuesday afternoon. Award-winning writers and directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as “DANIELS,” originally premiered their film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at SXSW in 2022. The movie later went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. In a conversation about the future of storytelling at this year’s SXSW on Tuesday, the duo commented on the inevitable rise of AI and how to approach it, calling the technology both “amazing” and “terrifying.”

As Kwan first explained, modern capitalism only worked because we compelled people to work, rather than forced them to do so.

“We had to change the story we told ourselves and say that ‘your value is your job,” he told the audience. “You are only worth what you can do, and we are no longer beings with an inherent worth. And this is why it’s so hard to find fulfillment in this current system. The system works best when you’re not fulfilled,” he said, then paused. “Which brings me back to AI,” Kwan continued to a thunder of applause and cheers.

Remarking that the crowd must love AI, given the hoots and hollering that was being heard, Kwan admitted that many people will call the technology amazing and he agreed.

“It’s magic,” he said. “It’s probably going to solve cancer. It’s probably going to give us a lot of climate solutions. This is a powerful thing,” Kwan continued. “But I’m really terrified of what this new story we’re going to have to tell ourselves in order to accept this new convenience, this new progress. It’s terrifying,” he added as a single solitary voice cheered in the now otherwise quiet crowd.

“So imagine what this technology will do within this current system, within this current incentive structure. This is the same system that brought us climate change, income inequality, and the general lack of gratitude and understanding of our worth and the worth of those around us,” Kwan said.

Plus, he noted, if you are feeling anxious about AI, it’s probably because, deep down, you know you’re next. “Even if the jobs aren’t going to be lost, the value of the job will go down, right? … It will slowly be compounded and normalized until we don’t even realize it,” he said.

Kwan pointed to how social media had already altered our story. A technology meant to connect us ended up making us lonelier than we have ever been. But, with AI, we still have the opportunity to “rewrite the stories and rewrite the systems for tomorrow,” he explained.

Still, he cautioned that didn’t mean we could choose to ignore AI’s progress or even its usefulness.

“I also want to say, we’re not saying ‘don’t use AI.’ I don’t believe in dogmas. I don’t believe in that kind of puritanical lifestyle — it doesn’t work. AI is here. It is going to be rapidly deployed in every aspect of our life,” Kwan said.

Scheinert agreed, adding that, instead, people should think about why they’re using AI.

“Are you trying to use it to create the world you want to live in? Are you trying to use it to increase value in your life and focus on the things that you really care about? Or are you just trying to, like, make some money for the billionaires, you know?” Scheinert asked the audience. “And if someone tells you, there’s no side effect. It’s totally great, ‘get on board’ — I just want to go on the record and say that’s terrifying bullshit. That’s not true. And we should be talking really deeply about how to carefully, carefully deploy this stuff,” he said.

The crowd then erupted into sustained applause.

They, too, had their reservations about AI, it seemed.

Kwan jumped back in to add that people need to look at why it “feels so wrong to use AI,” while also surviving this current environment where AI will basically be everywhere. He also reminded the audience why we create art.

“Why did we write ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ the way we did? And the answer is, we did it to save ourselves. Nigeria is actively seeking information from Binance regarding its top 100 users in the country and all transaction history spanning the past six months, according to a Financial Times report.

This news overlaps with the revelation of the names of the two executives from the cryptocurrency exchange who were detained two weeks ago: Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s head of investigations, and Nadeem Anjarwalla, the crypto platform’s regional manager for Africa, the Wired reported Tuesday.

Last month, Gambaryan, who was a former crypto-focused U.S. federal agent, and Anjarwalla had their passports confiscated and have been held in confinement at a government facility in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Wander the Modex floor long enough and you’ll stumble upon some wearable robotics. The category has nowhere near the presence of AMRs (autonomous mobile robots) or storage and retrieval systems, but exosuits are increasing in acceptance for their ability to eliminate the repetitive stress that comes with lifting and moving heavy loads all day.

While I’ve written about a number of these companies over the years, my actual first-hand experience is limited. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity to take Verve Motion’s SafeLift Exosuit for a spin. The form factor most closely resembles a backpack that houses the battery and electronics.

You put it on over your shoulders and then snap yourself in with a pair of chest straps. Next, another pair of soft straps are stretched around your thighs and Velcro-ed in place. It’s a bit awkward, though most use cases don’t involve wearing the system atop business casual dress in the middle of a crowded convention center (I assume). The system weighs 6.5 pounds in total and is designed to accommodate wearers standing 5’0” to 6’6”. It’s reasonably comfortable.

The Modex demo is a simple one. First you lift a big, orange Pelican-style case weighing 30 pounds. Then you do it again with the assistance cranked up. As someone in the throes of degenerative disc disease, I clearly deserve some kind of journalistic award for this morning’s demo.

The thigh straps are connected to a pair of soft fabric cables that retract into the backpack with a bit of a yank. This assistive tug reduces the strain on your arms. Similarly, the system offers resistance as you bend over, slowing you as you lower down the payload.

Verve Motion sells SafeLift as part of a larger system featuring a wall of lockers/cubby holes used to store and charge the exosuits. You can also charge the batteries separately and swap them out throughout the day.

When we spoke with the Cambridge, Massachusetts startup last year on the occasion of a $20 million raise, co-founder and CEO Ignacio Galiana told TechCrunch that Verve had sold more than 1,000 suits to date.

Verve Motion raises $20M to grow its exosuit business

Wander the Modex floor long enough and you’ll stumble upon some wearable robotics. The Modex demo is a simple one. First you lift a big, orange Pelican-style case weighing 30 pounds. Then you do it again with the assistance cranked up. As someone in the throes of degenerative disc disease, I clearly deserve some kind of journalistic award for this morning’s demo.

MIT professor Mike Stonebraker has been at the forefront of database technology for more than 50 years. The former Turing Award winner invented the Ingres and Postgres databases and helped launch a number of companies, including Streambase Systems (acquired by Tibco in 2013), VoltDB, Tamr and SciDB. Now 80, he knows a thing or two about database technology and launching companies.

His latest project, DBOS, puts the database at the center of the software stack, reducing the operating system to a small kernel of low-level functions. He believes that in the modern data-centric world, Linux hasn’t kept up with the scale and speed required to process copious amounts of data in the cloud, so as he’s done throughout his illustrious career, he did the research and developed updated technology for modern data requirements, and of course, also launched a company.

Today, DBOS officially launched with an $8.5 million seed investment.

Stonebraker, who is co-founder and CTO at the company, says the startup is the culmination of a three-year joint research project between Stanford and MIT (just a little bit of brain power there). “The genesis of the project was OLTP (online transaction processing), database systems have gotten a lot faster in the last 15 years. And so the thesis was that they would be competitive as a new operating system stack,” he told TechCrunch.

He became interested in trying to put a database system at the bottom of the technology stack as close to bare metal as possible where the operating system usually sits. Bare metal is a term used to describe the pure hardware layer where no software exists. Flipping the OS and the database is a bold and revolutionary idea.

He says the company vision really came together after he saw a talk by Databricks CTO Matei Zaharia, who would become a DBOS co-founder and advisor. Zaharia realized at Databricks that as the amount of data scaled to previously unseen heights, it required a new way of thinking about the software stack. “One thing we had discovered is, as we kept building services to support the database cloud at Databricks, and scale to millions of workloads running at the same time, was that actually it was much easier to make things very database-centric,” Zaharia explained.

That reinforced the idea that had been forming in Stonebraker’s mind, and he began looking at how to take tasks that had been traditionally run in the OS with the C++ programming language, and run them in the database instead, using SQL queries. While operating systems folks were understandably threatened by this notion, so far he has been able to build file, scheduling and messaging systems in DBOS by running SQL queries. What’s more, he’s tested it at a major bank and a consumer food company. These are operations that are traditionally handled at the operating system level.

“We proved it’s performance competitive with whatever you’re currently doing. So that gave us the courage to keep going,” Stonebraker said. One of the cool things about this approach is the ability to take advantage of database logging capabilities to keep a record of all the operating system events for as long as you like.

“So if a ransomware attack began 12 minutes ago, you just back up everything 13 minutes, a single step around the problem, and you’re back up and running almost instantaneously.” The experimental project became the company DBOS last year. The current product set includes three main pieces: an open source SDK where developers generate and test code locally, before deploying to an auto-scaling serverless cloud. The time travel debugger — the ability to move the OS back and forth in time — also runs in the cloud service.

Stonebraker acknowledges that companies aren’t going to completely change the way they run applications, so the startup is targeting more green field opportunities where companies being built today could take advantage of this new approach to organizing software. More established companies could look at moving specific pieces or newer projects to DBOS, he said.

While Stonebraker and Zaharia have substantial day jobs, making it more challenging to run a company, it’s certainly something that Stonebraker in particular has deep experience managing.

He has hired a CEO to run the daily operations, and the company currently has a team of eight engineers building the products.

The $8.5 million seed investment was was led by Engine Ventures with participation from Construct Capital, Sinewave and Gutbrain Ventures.

MIT professor Mike Stonebraker has been at the forefront of database technology for more than 50 years.
