Samsung / Galaxy S24 Ultra teardown shows its huge vapor chamber
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra is a hot device in the current smartphone market. The new flagship is still in pre-order but is seeing overwhelming demand, so much so that the expected delivery dates have been pushed back by over a month. We aren’t even surprised, as it is arguably the best smartphone available today. The device packs industry-leading specs and is built incredibly strong. A teardown video on YouTube now gives us a look at its inside.
YouTube channel PBKReviews, known for tearing apart brand-new phones and reassembling them on camera, recently published one such video of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As usual, the first step is to remove the SIM tray, which sits at the bottom of the phone. After that, we can apply heat on the back of the phone to loosen the adhesive underneath. This allows a pry tool to easily cut through the glue.Advertisement Advertisement
The glass back plate comes off with no wires or cables attached. Below it, Samsung has used 17 screws to hold everything in place. Once those are removed, you can lift off the wireless charging coil, NFC antenna, and the UWB (Ultra Wideband) antenna in one piece. You can then proceed to disconnect all cables and lift off the top speaker and earpiece in a single assembly and the bottom speaker and vibration motor in another.
They then lifted off the main board, which has the rear cameras attached to it. The connectors for the cameras are on the underside of the board, which has a stacked design. The selfie camera, meanwhile, is glued in place and harder to remove. As expected, Samsung has pasted a graphite film over the processor to help transfer heat. It has also applied a thermal paste to keep things cool.
That isn’t all, though. Under the battery, which comes off fairly easily thanks to pull tabs, there is a massive vapor chamber that extends below the main board. Samsung says the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s vapor chamber is almost twice (1.9x) as large as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It helps the phone remain cool during heavy usage, effectively maintaining the performance level for a prolonged duration. Advertisement
Samsung switched from a curved display to a flat one on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. While that should have made it easier to remove the screen, it doesn’t seem so. The company has allegedly glued the display down to the frame, making it “almost impossible” to pull it off without damage. There is a layer of graphite film under the display as well. Removing that gives us a better look at the massive vapor chamber.
Apart from the screen, most other Galaxy S24 Ultra components are easy to remove and replace. Since replacement parts are available easily, anyone with a know-how of all this can easily fix minor damage at home. PKKReviews gave the phone a repairability score of 9 out of 10, which is excellent. You can watch the full teardown video of the Galaxy S24 Ultra below.
