Officials gathered Tuesday afternoon to cut the ribbon on four DC-Fast Charging Level 3 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at the Middletown Township Municipal Center.
The fast-charging stations mark the first installed by a municipality to implement fast charging stations, according to Middletown Township Board of Supervisors Chairperson Mike Ksiazek. bus charging station
The four chargers, which are installed behind the township building, were paid for by a $215,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant program and a $60,000 PECO EVsmart rebate.
Those who use the chargers will have to pay a fee for the electricity, but the cost to charge up a car is typically less than a tank of gas.
The township’s new stations are powered by FLO, a company that has stations across the U.S. and Canada.
Middletown Township already had charging stations at the public works complex on Veterans Highway (Route 413) and Styer Orchard.
Township officials said the chargers, which have already been used by the public, mark a step in the township’s push toward improving sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The township recently purchased an electric vehicle for officials to use.
“We are thrilled to introduce Middletown Township’s Level 3 Charging Stations, further solidifying our position as a leader in sustainable initiatives within the state,” said Ksiazek. “These stations represent our dedication to providing residents and visitors with accessible, convenient, and efficient charging options, supporting the transition to cleaner transportation alternatives.”
Officials from Republican State Sen. Frank Farry, Democratic State Rep. Jim Prokopiak, Republican State Rep. Joe Hogan offices were on hand for the event. Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie, a Democrat, helped cut the ribbon.
Electric vehicle introduction and adoption has been slow in the U.S., but sales were up in the final quarter of 2023, according to Cox Automotive data.
Despite the growth, some automakers have slashed electrical vehicle sales forecasts.
A recent BBC article pointed to high prices for electric vehicles, lack a charger infrastructure, and slow adoption by consumers has hurtles.
