A man from Winthrop is dead after police say he crossed the center line on Route 2 in Farmington early Tuesday and crashed into an oncoming tanker truck.
The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. near 156 Farmington Falls Road right in front of the Fire Department and Town Office.
Police say Noah Brochu, 26, was headed north when he crossed into oncoming traffic.
The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles and Brochu had to be cut from the wreckage. He died at the scene.
The driver of the truck, a man from Virginia, was checked out at the hospital and released.
The truck was hauling argon refrigerated liquid, but none of it leaked.
Police said it appeared that Brochu was speeding, but the crash was still under investigation.
State environmental officials did respond to help contain and clean up about 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled.
The road was closed for about five hours while police investigated.
