Its L8 factory housed L8-1-1 and L8-2-1 lines on the fourth floor and L8-1-2 and L8-2-2 lines on the eighth. The remaining floor are offices.
L8-1-1 has now been converted to A5 which manufactures Gen 8 quantum dot (QD)-OLED panels for TVs and amonitors. L8-2-1 is being converted to A6 to manufacture Gen 8 IT OLED panels.
Samsung Display is now planning to sell equipment at L8-1-2 and L8-2-2 lines. These line no longer manufacture LCD panels. However, new equipment has not been installed in them so far.
However, whether there will be demand for the Gen 8 LCD equipment remains unclear.
This is because Chinese display panel makers are now already running Gen 10 LCD lines that are more economical than Gen 8.
Samsung Display has posted the notice of sale through its affiliate Samsung C&T and this itself shows demand may not be high, sources said.
But some companies may approach Samsung Display to replace some equipment, they said.
Samsung Display initially planned to end its LCD business in 2021 but the pandemic caused prices of the panels to jump. Samsung’s TV business requested Samsung Display extend its LCD business to 2022 to maintain procurement.
L8-1-1, now A5, was the first to go offline in 2019; QD-OLED equipment were installed starting in July 2020.
