MENOMINEE, MI – The sound of mechanical parts moving interrupted the noise of rushing water inside the Menominee Dam. Moments later, hundreds of gallons of river water poured out of a fish elevator and into a large catch tank, followed by two thrashing lake sturgeon and a few other small fish.
A lineup of children squealed as the prehistoric species splashed into the tank. They gathered with their parents during an annual public tour to observe the lake sturgeon elevator specially designed to help rebuild the iconic and ancient fish population in Lake Michigan’s Green Bay.
