Professional Tool Reviews for Pros
Exposed rebar is not only unsightly, it can also be dangerous. If you’re in the trades and work with rebar regularly, it pays to have a tool that makes cutting it easy. The Makita Cordless Steel Rod Flush Cutter puts a spin on the typical grinder design by adding a shroud to let you cut rebar and steel rods as close as 1/8 inch from the surface. The Makita XCS06 uses an 18V battery to power its brushless motor. While it’s not a new-to-market tool, it seems to be an updated version of the brand’s XCS02, which has been discontinued at the time of writing.
This newer model introduces an updated blade configuration, featuring an inner gear flange with positioning pins with no pre-fixed arbor. The old model had an arbor that was attached to the blade.
The big deal with the XCS06 is its ability to cut through rebar and threaded rod nearly flush to your surface. The shroud design enables it to cut up to 1/8-inch flush.
This cutter employs a 4-5/16-inch carbide-tipped blade that spins at up to 2,200 RPM with very few sparks. While it’s much slower than a standard angle grinder, this performance results in cooler cuts that you can touch with your bare hands. The blade also leaves smooth, burr-free cuts.
Finally, to ensure an even cut, the Makita Steel Rod Flush Cutter features a stopper that holds your rebar or threaded rod at a 90° angle.

This cutter retails for $1,329 as a bare tool and $1429 as a kit, including a 5.0Ah battery and charger. Makita backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.
