Many plant-based protein powders fall short because they lack a complete amino acid profile, meaning they don’t provide all nine of the essential amino acids needed to build and maintain lean muscle mass. Furthermore, Legion’s commitment to using all-natural, non-GMO ingredients further enhances the appeal of Plant+. The company intentionally avoids refined sugars and non-nutritive sweeteners like sucrose, dextrose, sucralose, or acesulfame potassium, opting instead for natural sweeteners like stevia leaf and monk fruit extract. When it comes to flavors, Plant+ offers six options, including classics like Dutch chocolate and French vanilla, along with more adventurous choices like cinnamon cereal, salted caramel, and apple pie. I’ve personally tried the Dutch chocolate and apple pie flavors, and found they tasted far better than other plant-based protein powders I’ve sampled in the past. They lacked the typical chalky or earthy taste and avoided the overly thick consistency that’s often associated with plant-based protein powders. The mixability is also top-notch, which is nice for when you don’t have a blender on hand.

“This can be really useful post workout, as consuming protein within the first hour after working out is ideal for muscle protein synthesis. Therefore, shaking with milk or even just water is a quick way to get down a post workout drink that tastes good.”

The one drawback of this Legion supplement is that it offers just 20 servings per container, compared to the 30 servings provided in Legion’s Whey+ and Casein+. “Okay—I can’t even begin to compare the quality and taste of Legion’s Plant Protein! I have tried many, many I mean manyyyyy vegan protein powders and have found one of two things: 1. Great flavor but filled with so much junk, of course it tastes good 2. Incredibly chalky and just nasty flavor and not enough protein. Legion Plant Protein has blown me away! Casein+ is a slow-digesting protein powder designed to deliver a sustained release of amino acids during extended periods without food, making it well suited for long work shifts or overnight recovery.

Casein, which is the protein found in Legion Athletics Casein+, is renowned for its unique slow-digesting qualities, making it an ideal choice for supporting muscle growth and recovery during extended periods without food, such as overnight. ( 9 ) While not everyone may require a casein protein powder , athletes and bodybuilders in particular can benefit from its potential advantages.

Casein is an animal-based protein supplement and the primary protein found in milk. In fact, casein makes up around 80% of the protein in cow’s milk, with the remaining 20% coming from whey. ( 6 ) While both casein and whey proteins share similar macronutrient profiles, they differ significantly in their rates of digestion. This is due to casein’s unique property of forming a gel-like substance in the stomach, which gradually releases amino acids to be absorbed by the body inside the small intestine. ( 7 )

This slow breakdown process allows casein to provide a continuous supply of amino acids into the bloodstream, supporting prolonged muscle protein synthesis, which is the process by which muscle tissue is built and repaired. ( 8 ) For athletes and bodybuilders, who often engage in rigorous strength training and heavy weightlifting, this continuous supply is crucial for maximizing muscle development and recovery, and is often consumed prior to sleep. The one thing to make note of, is that protein can sometimes increase body temperature during digestion, which can affect sleep quality in some.

In addition to its effective slow-digesting properties, Casein+ is appreciated for its high-quality ingredients and excellent taste. The cinnamon cereal flavor has become a staple in my nightly routine and easily satisfies my sweet tooth cravings before bed.

Each serving provides approximately 25 grams of protein with a creamy texture (especially when using milk) that mixes well, although I would suggest using a blender for this supplement as it is much thicker than a traditional whey. While the thicker consistency may take some getting used to, it does contribute to a more satisfying and substantial shake that helps support muscle recovery throughout the night.

Casein+ costs the same as Legion’s Whey+, at $2.00 per serving. It offers great value considering that casein protein powders are typically more expensive than whey.

“Minor quibbles: this powder is really fine and can easily go *poof* and make a mess while you’re scooping. The flavor is rather light and I wish it had a little more oomph of banana-ness. Other than that, it’s tasty, has a really nice smooth & creamy texture, mixes well, and has a great protein for calories ratio. On the pricier side, but I find this to be of an excellent quality, and it justifies the price for me.”

Richard B. leaves another helpful tip, noting you should avoid premixing your casein protein shakes. “Just a tip. Don’t premix your shakes and leave them in the fridge for later. It will become so thick and foamy that you literally can’t drink it. The way to use this casein is to mix the shake and drink it right away. At that point, it is still a liquid and actually tastes pretty good. Leave it for a few hours and it turns into almost a solid.”

Monique S. tried the Dutch chocolate flavor, saying, “I like the regular Legion protein better, this one has a different taste and leaves a film in your mouth. The macros are great just not the taste.”

While marketed as a “protein” bar, this product also packs in 250 calories per serving—roughly double the calories in a Legion Whey+ protein shake. This higher calorie count positions Legion Protein Bars more as a meal replacement option than a typical protein bar supplement.

Depending on what you’re looking for, Legion Protein Bars may or may not be the right fit for you. The key consideration with these bars is that they function more as a meal replacement option than a traditional protein bar, given their balanced macronutrient profile and higher calorie count.

With around 250 calories per bar, Legion’s Protein Bars contain more carbohydrates than protein, making them a better fit for those who need sustained energy rather than a low-calorie protein supplement. While this isn’t necessarily a drawback depending on your goals, these bars might not be the best choice if you’re following a weight loss program or cutting after a bulk. However, if you’re looking for a convenient snack between meals that can help sustain you, or some on-the-go post-workout recovery, these bars can be an excellent fit, giving you a great mix of protein, fat and carbs.

One of my favorite features of the Legion Protein Bars is their higher dietary fiber content, which isn’t common in a conventional protein bar. Each bar contains six to nine grams of prebiotic fiber from chicory root, which is not only beneficial for gut health but also supports digestion. ( 11 ) Fiber also plays a crucial role in maintaining steady energy levels and promoting a feeling of fullness, making it a potential tool for those managing their weight or trying to control cravings and hunger levels throughout the day. ( 10 ) In a time when many people fall short of their daily fiber intake, this addition is a welcome benefit.

“Fiber is really an unsung hero in the nutrition world, with data suggesting most get way less than is recommended. While fruits, vegetables, legumes and a wide variety of different grains could provide the recommended 25-38 grams daily for women and men, respectively, most don’t eat the variety of those foods needed.  And that’s where the complement of a fiber rich bar or similar product can be useful.

Regarding the flavors, I’ve tried both the chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate peanut butter varieties. While they don’t taste exactly like real cookie dough or a chocolate peanut butter candy bar, they’re not meant to, and they’re still quite tasty for protein bars.

The texture, however, is hard to miss. These bars are incredibly dense and can be pretty firm. I recommend keeping them at room temperature, and if you find them too hard, try microwaving them for a few seconds (after you take them out of the wrapper). This softens the texture significantly, making them much more enjoyable to eat.

These bars are on the pricier side compared to Legion’s protein powders, at $3.33 per bar. However, you may find the convenience and macronutrient profile worth the price.

Additional flavors could make this product more accessible, especially for those who are unable to enjoy it due to its inclusion of tree nuts in the form of almonds, a common allergen.

The protein sources in a plant protein powder determine whether it’s a complete protein source. Some plant sources are missing or limited in one or another amino acid, making them incomplete. The source(s)n also determine the calories from protein versus carbohydrates or fats. We evaluate eight plant protein sources: soy, pea, hemp, brown rice, lentil, chia, pumpkin seed, and blends.

To be considered complete proteins, protein supplements have to consistently provide all nine essential amino acids, which are necessary for supporting muscle growth and overall development. Therefore, complete proteins receive the highest marks.

Ideally, most of the calories consumed through plant protein powder should come from protein. However, depending on the protein source and other ingredients, calories can also come from carbohydrates and fats.

Research suggests aiming for approximately 25-30 grams of protein per serving to optimize muscle protein synthesis, which can help with gaining or maintaining muscle mass as we age. While daily protein needs vary by individual, based on age, gender, training, goals and the other parts of the diet, 25-30 grams per meal meets the needs of most people. Most plant protein supplements contain around 15-30 grams of protein per serving. However, the quality, types, and combination of plant proteins may determine the ideal quantity, meaning sometimes higher amounts may be beneficial, given the source.

Price is an important factor for consumers and often (though not always) reflects the quality of a product. There are high-quality plant proteins that cost below average and relatively low-quality plant protein products that cost more than average. Because of this potential discrepancy, this category carries less weight in the overall score.
