Police are investigating after dozens of drain covers were stolen overnight.
People woke this morning to find the drains open to the elements in Haxby, Wigginton, Woodthorpe and into York itself.
Teams of City of York Council workers have been going out and coning off the drains so neither residents or their pets fall into the holes.
People in the affected areas are being urged to check footage they have on video doorbells or CCTV – and send any suspicious activities caught on camera to police.
It is assumed that the thieves have taken the metal covers to sell on as scrap.
Michael Howard, head of highways and transport at City of York Council, said: “We’re aware that a number of cast iron road gully lids and frames were stolen last night in areas of York including Wigginton, Skelton, Leeman Road and Foxwood.
“The matter has been reported to North Yorkshire Police who are investigating.
“In the meantime, our priority is keeping the public safe and our teams are working to make the areas safe.
“Incidents like this incur a significant cost to the taxpayer and can cause a danger to road users, so we’d encourage anyone with information regarding this to get in touch with North Yorkshire Police on 101.”
One of those who was first to spot the missing ironwork posted this advice: “Keep a close eye on young children, pets. Car and van drivers have a quick check around your vehicle before moving off.
“Some effected drains might be close to crossing points to those whos sight isn’t as good as it used to be please take extra care.”
