23 Best Sectional Sofas, According to AD Editors (2024) | Architectural Digest

Forget everything you thought you knew about the sectional: Too informal? Too inflexible? Too big for small spaces? Not in our book. The best sectional sofa has it all: plenty of seating, endless styles for any home decor, and lots of room to comfortably stretch out. But perhaps the most crucial part of the sectional is its versatility—especially in an era that has retailers offering customizations that can arrive perfectly tailored to your floor plan and at your door in a matter of days. Former Architectural Digest editor Benjamin Reynaert made a similar case for the sectional, saying it allows for “a level of customization akin to bespoke furniture, but without the high-shelf costs that come with building a piece from the ground—or sofa leg—up.”

But sure, it’s one thing to talk about the virtues of a piece of furniture without actually putting it to a sit test, something a designer might do for a few minutes in a showroom. Here at Clever that wasn’t nearly enough for us, especially for a splurge piece that might cost a few thousand dollars and will (hopefully) live in your home for years. We’re big believers that no piece of furniture is too big or too small to be purchased online, but there are a few things you might want to know firsthand—namely whether or not it makes sense in a modern household.

So we sat down—and laid, and jumped, and sprawled—to test 23 different couches in apartments, suburban homes, and rural farmhouses across the Northeast (shoutouts to Chicago) from ordering to assembly to the first new sofa nap. If you’re looking for something more traditional to create a formal seating arrangement in a family room or a super-comfy, family-friendly modular sofa for pet cuddles and movie nights, there is a sectional for you.

The Dune in particular is the brand’s version of a classic slipcover sofa, and with six different styles of sectional to customize and classic linen upholstery, this very versatile couch still makes a statement in your home without standing out too much.

Sundays Wind Down Modular Sectional

After a disappointing experience with a sectional in a similar size and color—one that was overly stiff, uninviting, and required near-constant cleaning—our tester Shoko and her husband wondered whether it was possible to find a truly comfortable couch that also managed to be attractive, kid-friendly, and made using materials we felt good about.

This Sundays sectional was the upgrade upgrade they were looking for. Designed with clean lines, deep cushions, and just-right balance of softness and structure, it never appears slouchy or sloppy (even with a three-year-old who has taken to practicing high dives and somersaults on it). It’s even been easy to clean smaller messes and the fabric hasn’t pilled or dulled. Added bonus: The Wind Down’s generously sized, moveable ottoman doubles as a handy surface for trays or toys (just double-check measurements in advance to make sure it’ll fit comfortably!).

There’s a reason MCM design hasn’t gone anywhere in the past several decades (well, lots of reasons actually; entire books have been written on the subject), and we keep finding new and innovative examples of its principles put to work. From eco-friendly to budget-friendly, there’s a MCM sectional out there for anyone looking.

If you’re looking for a high-performance, no-nonsense, does-the-job (and does-it-with-style) sectional, this is it. A classic L-shape design with a simple silhouette and clean lines, EQ3’s Cello is comfortable and tailored. Is this a statement piece? Not necessarily. The lines are straightforward and the form hardly deviates from couch conventions. But you can dress it up in a range of upholstery options or else add your own throw pillows to enliven neutral fabrics. And it’s definitely built to last, with a sturdy internal frame and integrated hardware. Buyers should bear in mind that it’s a big piece, so you’ll need a big room. And depending on the angle from which you’ll be looking at it, you may consider the flat arm option (lower, more dynamic) rather than the rounded arm version (which maintains uniform height with the back). There are two leg heights too, depending on how low-slung you want the sectional to feel. All in all, this is a very solid piece and a very solid choice.

“I was surprised by how pleasant the fabric was to the touch. You never know what you are gonna get from a picture, but this feels very polished and nuanced.” —Sam Cochran, global features director
