The Info Source of record for architectural glass leaders. Float Flat Glass
Critics and fans can debate who will win Super Bowl LVIII all they like, but for those in the glass and glazing industry, the real winner is Allegiant Stadium. The Roomba-esque facility stands out among the kitschy Las Vegas aesthetics, with its sleek black design and ample use of glass.
The stadium, opened in 2020, is home to the Las Vegas Raiders. However, it will host the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Franciso 49ers, who will vie for the annual Super Bowl trophy beneath a dome-shaped transparent roof.
Designed by Kansas City-based Manica Architecture, Allegiant Stadium features more than 410,000 square feet of dark-tinted glass, supplied and installed by various companies, including Enclos, Giroux Glass and façade consultant Arup. Giroux’s work included everything from interior curtainwall, mirror wrapping columns, mirrors on ceilings, Sensitile LED mirrors, interior frameless glass entry’s, custom print laminated glass, glass wall panels in suites, a sliding glass partition wall in the owner’s suite, black mirrors throughout common areas and in the suites, aluminum/glass doors, all-glass doors, sliding doors and transaction windows.
Glass suppliers and fabricators included AGC Interpane, Glasswerks, Glass Supply, Pulp Studio and Sensitile, among others.
Who do you want to win Super Bowl LVIII?
Enclos provided design-assist services for the façade, including unitized curtainwall, louvers, storefront and doors, metal panel ribbons, and soffits and fascia panels. The stadium’s exterior comprises 410,614 square feet of curtainwall with ribbon walls and architectural louvers extending from the curtainwall.
According to a Raiders video series (From the Ground Up) documenting the stadium’s construction, the curtainwall comprises 2,400-panel sets that weigh up to 3,900 pounds each. They were assembled offsite at Enclos’ Las Vegas location.
Tommy White, Laborers Union Local 872 Secretary-Treasurer, told Las Vegas-based KSNV that the glass is tinted in three or four shades. They’re also glare-resistant to keep the inside of the stadium cooler for fans.
“Each section is a different size, even on the glass,” he said. “Each panel of glass is a different size so to get it just right, and to get the color just right, you have to be calculated on how it gets put in. Nobody wants anything off.”
