The 9 Best Comforter Sets of 2024, According to Testing and Research

Better Homes & Gardens / Dera Burreson

Your comforter and sheets set can be the difference between a good night’s sleep or a restless night spent kicking the covers off the bed.

If you’re thinking about overhauling your bedding, a comforter set can make it easy because they include all you need to transform your sleeping space. Interior designer Dahiana Pena says that your comforter set is “likely to be the first and last thing you see when entering and leaving the bedroom.”

“It’s important that [it] be a style, color, or pattern that you like enough to see regularly,” she says. It is also important to take quality into account.

“Whether you routinely place your comforter aside at the end of the night or bundle up with your set each night, a comforter should be soft and comfortable,” she explains. “High quality materials such as Egyptian cotton, silk, and even cashmere are some of the best and worth the investment. Natural fibers, including cotton and linen, are also safe and often sustainable options for the bedroom.”

In addition to material, interior designer Ruthie Jackson suggests paying attention to the stitching on the comforter. “I look for comforters with box stitching. It helps the fill stay in place and prevents cold spots,” she says. “The bigger the box stitch, usually the warmer the comforter. A smaller box stitch is reserved for light to medium weight.”

To find the best comforter sets, we spent hours researching and testing comforters to find out which are the most durable, breathable, and comfortable.

For this article, we tested the first five comforters on our list based on quality, texture, and breathability. For the last four comforter sets, we conducted extensive research to find additional options. When conducting research, we considered material and care.

It includes 11 pieces, so you’ll have everything you need for your bed.

The comforter is not machine washable.

The Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Move-In Bundle comforter set includes 11 pieces, all of which make it possible to upgrade your bedding from start to finish. With fabrics that are OEKO-TEX certified for chemical safety, the set includes one fitted sheet, a flat sheet, duvet cover, four pillowcases, one comforter, two pillows, and a silk eye mask.

The Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter impressed us during testing. It’s made of a soft cotton sateen shell and recycled PET microfiber fill, with a baffle box construction that keeps the fill evenly distributed. During our testing, we loved that it felt lightweight while still feeling luxurious. It also hit the sweet spot when it came to keeping us feeling warm, but not stifled.

This comforter set comes with Brooklinen’s Luxe Sateen Sheets, which are made using 480 thread count of long-staple cotton. They’re soft and smooth, and have a slightly luminous finish that adds just a bit of sheen to your bedding. The bundle is available in multiple colors, including graphite and steel oxford stripe, window pane, graphite, cream, blue tide, willow, beach grass, and white.

You are also given the option of down, down alternative, and memory foam for your bed pillows, which come with firm, mid-plush, or plush support and in a standard or king size. We love that this set comes with four pillowcases, as many sets only come with two.

We love that this is a customizable comforter set, so you can make decisions about how you sleep, the support you need, and the design you’d like. It is an investment, but taking into account the quality, and the company’s 365-day warranty, it’s worth the price.

While the sheets can be washed on cold in your washing machine, the comforters are not meant to be washed frequently. Instead, spot clean or dry clean as needed, and hang the comforter outside on a dry day, giving it a good shake to get the dust out of it.

It has a mulberry silk fill that is naturally temperature regulating.

This comforter can only be spot cleaned or dry cleaned.

After testing it in our lab, the Cozy Earth Comforter with Silk Fill Set felt like the most luxurious choice because of its high quality and breathability. The set includes a duvet, a comforter, two pillowcases, a top sheet, a fitted sheet, and two silk pillows.

While testing, we noted that this comforter is not made with sewn-through or baffle-box construction; rather it has one even layer of fill that is held together with stitching around the edges. We did not notice the fill shifting at all, despite not having baffle-boxes or stitching to keep it in place.

It’s also worth noting that this comforter didn’t make any noise while tossing and turning during testing. We also appreciate that the fill is made of mulberry silk, which is naturally temperature regulating. We found it to have a medium weight, which makes it worth the splurge because you can use it as an all-season comforter.

This deluxe bedding bundle comes with a bamboo sheet set and duvet cover, which come in many colors, and both are made from 100% premium viscose from bamboo, which is soft and smooth to the touch.

They’re also temperature regulating, and get softer with each wash. While testing, we found that it was very easy to insert the duvet into its cover, and the duvet insert was smooth and cool to the touch.

Keep in mind that, while the sheets and duvet cover can be washed on cold in your washing machine, this comforter cannot be washed. It is suggested that you spot clean or dry clean only.

You’ll also want to use the included duvet cover because without the use of it, the manufacturer's extended warranty will not protect your comforter.

The comforter set is machine washable.

There are limited colorways available.

Cotton is a naturally breathable, lightweight, and moisture-wicking fiber, making it a great material for bedding. The Buffy Cloud Comforter Set includes a comforter, a top sheet and fitted sheet, two pillow cases, a duvet cover, and two pillows.

The sheet set is made of 100% cotton, which softens over time, and it’s a strong and durable material—it doesn’t pill, tear, or fade. The duvet cover is made of the same material, and helps to keep your comforter clean, as the cover keeps the comforter itself from coming into direct contact with your skin.

We love that it has corner ties that keep your comforter in place, so there is no shifting of the comforter inside the duvet throughout the night. When we put the duvet cover on the comforter, it was an easy and seamless process.

We appreciated the light and pillowy feel of the comforter during testing. After tossing and turning for 10 minutes, we were pleased to find that none of the fill had shifted and wasn’t lumpy. We found that the weight and material was enough to keep us warm without making us feel too hot or uncomfortable.

The fill is made of 100% recycled polyester, which is hypoallergenic. It has a sewn-through construction, which helps the fill to stay in place. Plus, it is machine washable, setting it apart from many other comforters, which often cannot be machine washed due to their size or fill.

We love that this comforter set comes with two pillows, which are available in standard or king size, and in soft, medium, and firm. Keep in mind that there are limited colors available—white, cream, a dark blue, light gray, and navy—so your design options may be limited.

This comforter is reversible, so you have two options to style your bed.

During testing, we found that the fill became lumpy in spots, and needed to be manipulated back into shape.

After testing, the Ugg Ava Stripe Comforter Set was one of our favorites. Its striped pattern is reversible, and the comforter itself was lightweight and comfortable. It comes with a comforter and two pillow shams, which add cohesion to your bedding design.

Pena says that this kind of comforter set can add “visual interest” to your room. “We are seeing a return of both color and texture in recent bedroom trends,” she says. “Things like ruching, pleating, and embroidery can liven up a room.”

We were impressed during testing when we found the filling of this comforter to be fluffy and substantial, and the outer shell to be super soft. The outer shell is made of 100% polyester textured faux fur and has solid micromink on the other side.

Though we could feel the contours of the stitched areas of the outer shell, we found that the stitching was not rough at all, and the comforter remained completely comfortable throughout testing. However, the fill did get a little lumpy after we tossed and turned under the comforter, but it was easy enough to move back into place with our hands.

When it came to breathability, we discovered that this is a great comforter for warmer months since it is fairly lightweight. It’s also machine washable, which is not always the case with comforter sets as they are often too bulky to wash and dry.

This set comes with three decorative pillows and a bed skirt for a complete look.

During testing, we found that the fabric of this comforter was a bit rough.

If you’re looking for a faux silk comforter set to lend some luxury to your bedroom, the Madison Park Amherst Collection Faux Silk Comforter is an ideal choice for the job.

It has everything you need to transform your bedding: two shams, three decorative pillows, a bed skirt, and a comforter. We tested this comforter set in our lab, and were impressed by its consistent filling and durability.

During testing, we found that this comforter is a good all-season choice, as it neither cools nor overheats, and is not too heavy. After tossing and turning beneath the blanket, the fill remained evenly distributed and did not shift, no matter how hard we tossed, turned, or shook the blanket.

Keep in mind that the outer shell of this comforter, which is made of 100% polyester, is not as soft or smooth as actual silk. We found during testing that it is a bit rougher than natural silk.

For those whose goal it is to add texture and dimension to their bedding, it’s a great choice that doesn’t break the bank. It’s also available in several different colors, so you can choose the option that best matches your bedroom style.

The queen size comes in 41 different colors and patterns, so you have plenty of options.

This comforter is better for warmer months, rather than year-round, as it’s lightweight.

The Downluxe Lightweight Solid Comforter Set exceeded our expectations for anyone looking for a wallet-friendly way to upgrade their bedding. This three-piece comforter set includes a comforter and two reversible pillow shams.

This comforter set gives you so much freedom when it comes to choosing the right color for your bedroom. With 41 reversible colors and patterns to choose from, it’s possible to get any color you need on a budget. There are multiple gingham and plaid options to choose from, as well as stripes and embroidered chevron.

In order to keep your comforter set looking new, machine wash on cold using the gentle cycle and either tumble dry on low or hang dry. Because the comforter is filled with microfiber, you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged in the wash. The quilted pattern sewn into the comforter also keeps the filling distributed evenly.

The comforter, which is made out of polyester and brushed microfiber, is a lightweight comforter, so it’s a good choice for the warmer months.

This set is OEKO-TEX certified, which means that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.

You may need to iron the comforter after drying.

The Threshold Washed Cotton Sateen Comforter & Sham Set looks like one you’d find in a hotel room. The Threshold Washed Cotton Sateen Comforter & Sham Set includes two pillow shams and a comforter, all made out of 100% cotton fabric with a sateen construction.

Decorated with a quilted style, this crisp white comforter is classic enough to blend in with whatever decor you’ve chosen for your room, while leaving it light and airy.

We love the slightly tufted style of this white comforter set, which gives it some texture and dimension, while also keeping the filling evenly distributed. If white isn’t your style, it also comes in seven other colorways including sage, light gray, blush, and black.

The comforter is made of a midweight fabric that keeps you warm, but not overheated, all year round, and its sateen construction makes the comforter set feel soft and ultra-comfy. The set is OEKO-TEX certified, which means that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals. The 250 thread count comforter contains fill material that is 100% polyester, which means it is machine washable.

In order to care for this comforter, machine wash, and tumble dry. Cotton is a tricky fabric to work with, so be careful not to dry it on too high of a temperature. You can iron the material as needed—cotton can be easily wrinkled.

The comforter comes in three colors: taupe, gray and navy.

The pickstitch textured stripes, as with many embroidered comforter sets, may easily pull.

The best farmhouse comforter set comes from the king and queen of the farmhouse aesthetic themselves: Chip and Joanna Gaines. The Hearth & Hand with Magnolia Pickstitch Stripe Comforter Set includes three pieces: The comforter and two matching shams.

It’s available in a full/queen or king size. It comes in three, neutral colors that will fit in with any farmhouse aesthetic: twilight taupe, railroad gray, and sterling blue.

We love the comforter’s pickstitch textured stripes because, from afar it may look like a neutral comforter set, but up close it adds texture and dimension to your space. This means that it can fit into your existing decor while still making a statement of its own. Keep in mind that the embroidered pattern runs a risk of pulling.

The comforter set is great for year-round use because it’s made of soft, lightweight fabric—made of 75% polyester and 25% linen—and 100% polyester fill. The backing material is 65% polyester and 45% cotton. If you run hot while you sleep, this comforter is breathable, so it keeps you cool, but if you’re someone who runs cold while they sleep, this is an ideal comforter set for the warmer months.

It’s also certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, which means that it has been independently tested against and does not contain any chemicals that were deemed harmful, so you can sleep well knowing you’re safe.

To launder, machine wash in cold water and tumble dry.

Product Details: Size: Queen | Material: Polyester, linen | Number of Pieces Included: Three

The bedding set is machine washable because it’s made of 100% microfiber material.

This set is not ideal for people who run cold at night.

This option from Cozy Lux is our favorite choice for a comforter set with sheets, as it's an affordable option that comes with two pillow shams, a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and two pillow cases. It also comes in a range of colors—white, black, gray, light gray, green, and pink—so you can upgrade your bedding to match your style.

The front of the comforter is a seersucker texture, while the underside of the comforter is smooth. This provides a nice addition to your space without adding too much noise or taking away from other statement pieces in your room.

The comforter also uses solid stitching, which prevents bunching. If you are someone who moves around while sleeping, the fitted sheet features a deep, 16-inch elastic pocket to help keep the sheet in place.

This comforter set uses 100% microfiber, which is a synthetic filling that is machine washable. Cleaning this set is easy—simply wash this comforter in cold water on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry it on low heat or dry it in the sun.

Keep in mind that, while this comforter set is great for sleepers who tend to run hot, it is a lightweight comforter, and so if you’re someone who gets cold easily, another option on our list may be better suited for you.

Overall, we’ve chosen the Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Move-In Bundle because it includes 11 pieces, making it easy to entirely make over your bed with one set, and it even comes with two pillows and a silk eye mask.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly comforter, the Downluxe Lightweight Solid Comforter Set is the best affordable comforter set, and it includes two pillow shams and a reversible comforter.

Better Homes & Gardens / Dera Burreson

While some of the products we chose were based on research, a few went through rigorous testing in our lab to determine the best comforter sets. The Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Move-In Bundle, Madison Park Amherst Collection Faux Silk Comforter, UGG Ava Stripe Comforter, and Cozy Earth Comforter with Silk Fill Set were among the 63 comforters we tested. They were chosen for this list because they are durable, comfortable, and held up after washing.

Before we got started, we inspected the comforters to see whether they had sewn-through or baffle box-constructions. We also carefully examined the quality of the stitches and made note of any imperfections or loose threads.

Additionally, we spent time examining how high and fluffy the individual sections of fill were. We also examined how the fill was distributed, and whether or not it was thinner in some areas than others.

We did this by pinching the fabric of the comforter to determine whether or not we could feel between the top and bottom layer of fabric, or if there was fill between. If it was the former, it signified that there was less fill, making it a lighter weight comforter. Feeling the fill indicated that the comforter was thicker and heavier.

Naturally, while testing comforters, we spent some time in bed—five minutes, to be exact—lying underneath the comforters to determine how soft they were, and whether or not there were any changes to our body temperature as we did.

We also tossed and turned in bed underneath the comforter, and during that time we noted if the fabric made noise. We also stood up and held the comforter from the side, shaking it 10 times, to test whether or not the fill shifted.

After performing these tests, we ranked each comforter on their quality, breathability, texture, and value.

Comforters are meant to hang over the side of your mattress and keep your sheets from view. Mattress sizes are standard across the board, which means it’s easy once you find the right mattress to find a corresponding comforter size.

Twin-size comforters are typically 66 to 68 inches wide and 86 to 88 inches long. Queen-size comforters are 86 to 88 inches wide and 96 to 100 inches long. Often, they tend to be 90 by 90 inches, in order to meet in the middle.

King-size comforters tend to be wider than they are long, measuring in at 102 inches wide, and 86 to 99 inches long. California king beds need comforters that are 107 to 110 inches wide and 96 to 98 inches long.

If your mattress is thick, you may want to consider a comforter that is either at the top of the size range, oversized, or size up completely, that way there is enough material to overhang. The Cozy Earth Comforter with Silk Fill Set is on the larger size, with the full/queen measuring at 96 x 100 inches.

When it comes to choosing the material of your comforter, there are two factors to consider: The material of the shell, and the filling that is on the inside.

The fabric shell is going to be the visible part of your comforter, so you can play with what fabric fits your style. Common fabrics include cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, flannel, faux fur or suede, microfiber, and sateen. Lighter fabrics like cotton, bamboo, silk or sateen are great for warmer months, while flannels and faux furs are better for cooler months.

Our pick for best splurge, the Cozy Earth Comforter with Silk Fill Set has sheet sets made of viscose from bamboo, and the comforter is made of ultra-soft, 100% mulberry silk. Our pick for the best cotton set, the Buffy Cloud Comforter Set comes with a set of sheets and a duvet cover made of 100% cotton percale, and a comforter made using a eucalyptus lyocell shell and recycled polyester fill.

Common comforter fill is made down or goose down, cotton, wool, polyester, and synthetic materials. Down is a filling made of feathers and is fluffy and warm while still being lightweight. These comforters are not typically machine washable, so caring for them can be more difficult.

If you’re looking for a machine washable comforter, the CozyLux Bed In A Bag Comforter Set, Buffy Cloud Comforter Set, and Threshold Washed Cotton Sateen Comforter & Sham Set, are all machine washable.

Wool filling is a heavier option so it will keep you warm, and it is also moisture wicking. Cotton is also commonly used as a filling as well. Synthetic materials are also available, which help keep costs down while being lightweight.

Comforter sets can include anywhere from three to 12 pieces. Comforter sets that include three pieces typically come with the comforter itself, plus two matching pillow shams, like the UGG Ava Stripe Comforter. Sometimes, they will come with four pieces, including a bed skirt. Some also include a duvet cover for your comforter, which are meant to extend the life of the bedding by reducing washing.

Others include sheet sets, which include two pillowcases, a fitted sheet and a top sheet. There are even options for bundles that include pillows, whether they are standard pillows or decorative shams and throw pillows that complete the look of your bedding.

Our pick for best overall, the Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Move-In Bundle, comes with 11 pieces including one fitted sheet, a flat sheet, duvet cover, four pillowcases, one comforter, and two pillows.

Better Homes & Gardens / Dera Burreson

There are a few benefits to getting a comforter set. The first being that you won’t have to worry about finding pillow shams (or sometimes, even sheets) that match or coordinate with your comforter, making it easier to bring a cohesive look to your sleeping space.

Comforters can be kept on your bed all year around, especially because often they aren’t as filled or heavy as duvets can be. This means they’re also the better option for those who tend to get hot.

There are a few factors that determine whether or not a comforter is good quality. While testing comforters in our lab, we did this by examining the stitching on the comforter and whether or not the fill shifted during use.

It’s also important to look at the materials used to make your comforter. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are durable and become softer over time. Bamboo, silk, or sateen are also soft and often more expensive.

Depending on the type of fill used in your comforter, you can check the quality by seeing whether or not it shifts and keeps its shape. Many comforters, like the Buffy Cloud Comforter Set, have a trial period or return policy to be sure you love your comforter.

Typically, baffle-box constructions will have a higher quality and are indicative of the best comforter sets, because it takes more time to make. However, just because a comforter has a sewn-through construction doesn’t mean it’s poor quality—a baffle-box will just feel more luxurious.

In general, comforters can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. This depends on the material and type of fill, how often you launder your comforter, and whether or not you choose to cover the comforter with a duvet cover.

If you do use a duvet cover, your comforter will require less laundering, as your body does not come into direct contact with the comforter. If your comforter looks thin, fill starts to escape from the comforter, or material begins to fray, it’s time to replace it.

Cooling Pillow Next to all of the products on this list, you may have noticed our BHG Recommends seal of approval. Products that earn the seal have been put through rigorous testing to make sure they're worth a spot in your home.
