Wooden wine box manufacturers fed up with playing second fiddle to cardboard containers

ine French wooden box manufacturers working with wines and spirits have established a joint association in order to take their message out to a broad audience, ranging from winery managers to consumers. Their aim is to “spark a preference for wood as a noble, natural, protective and carbonivorous material that has no chemical treatments”.

In its founding manifesto, the French Wooden Box Alliance (AFCB) aims to “go against the grain” and reach out to people to explain how wooden boxes are unfairly perceived as being less planet-friendly than cardboard boxes, despite the fact that “they have never been so relevant!” Seeking to avoid idle talk, the association has announced that it will commission a comparative Lifecycle Analysis between wooden boxes and cardboard packaging for wines and spirits, whose results will be published within the next twelve months. It also plans to introduce a scheme where 100% of waste from the sawmill to the finished box will be recycled and to support the development of renewable energies in its members’ workshops.
