Igus Introduces Innovative Slewing Ring Bearing Made Of Wood-Plastic Composite - Machine Maker

In a groundbreaking move, igus, has unveiled a new slewing ring bearing crafted from a unique wood-plastic composite (WPC). This innovative product, consisting of 50% wood and 50% high-performance plastics, marks a significant step towards integrating renewable raw materials into industrial production, offering customers a cost-effective, lubrication-free solution with a low CO2 footprint.

Exploring how renewable materials can be effectively utilized in industrial applications, igus has developed the iglidur PRT slewing ring bearing made from WPC. Marc Trenkler, Product Manager for Slewing Ring Bearings at igus GmbH, explained, “As a plastics expert, we are now also venturing into the wood sector. Last year, we introduced wooden shafts for our linear guides. This year, we are integrating wood directly into our products.” hdpe sheet production line

The new PRT bearing leverages igus’s proven injection moulding techniques, combining wood fibres with iglidur high-performance plastics. This mixture includes solid lubricants, ensuring the bearing operates smoothly without the need for additional lubrication or maintenance. The wood component not only enhances the bearing’s natural aesthetics but also contributes to its environmental sustainability. Both the housing and the component are made from this innovative WPC material, which can be assembled easily with just four screws.

Designed specifically for the standard installation size PRT 02, the new WPC slewing ring bearing offers a competitively priced alternative to traditional solid plastic bearings without compromising on performance. Its robust design makes it suitable for a range of applications, such as adjustable furniture technology. Notably, this new bearing boasts an exceptionally low CO2 footprint of just 0.0577kg. For comparison, the existing PRT-02-30-ECO, made from 97% regranulate, has a CO2 equivalent of 0.819868kg.

To ensure the product’s reliability and performance, the new WPC slewing ring bearing underwent rigorous testing in the 3,800m² igus laboratory. These tests confirmed the product’s high quality and dependability under various operating conditions.

With this innovative approach, igus demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and innovation, paving the way for the future use of renewable raw materials in industrial production. The introduction of the wood-plastic composite slewing ring bearing highlights igus’s dedication to reducing environmental impact while maintaining high standards of performance and reliability.
