Keep your feet comfy, dry, and odor-free with these expert-approved socks. types of floor drain trap
Sweaty feet can lead to more than just uncomfortably wet socks. Larger issues can result from damp socks, such as odor, athlete's foot, and fungal infections—which is why New York City-based podiatrist and surgeon Nelya Lobkova, DPM, says keeping feet clean and dry is important. One way to do that is by wearing socks that keep your feet dry with breathable fabrics to wick away moisture. And while they may not keep your feet from sweating, they can at least help you feel more comfortable and refreshed.
To find the best socks for sweaty feet, we spent hours consulting podiatrists and healthcare professionals to narrow down the most important features that keep feet dry and comfortable. Based on their guidance, we tested over 30 socks at home for six weeks to see how well they performed. We assessed them based on their breathability, comfort, odor control, quality, and overall value. Finally, a podiatrist from our medical review board reviewed this article for medical accuracy.
Maryland-based podiatrist Priya Parthasarathy, DPM, suggests pairs made with a blend of different materials labeled as "moisture-wicking" or "increased ventilation." While these qualities might not completely prevent your feet from sweating, they’ll help control any unwelcome side effects.
Parthasarathy says to avoid 100% cotton socks since they absorb moisture without wicking it away from the skin, which could worsen problems. Lobkova adds that cotton can also lead to blistering.
Connor recommends seeing a healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your sweating, accompanying health issues, or resulting skin breakdown. She adds that other indicators that it’s time to see a professional would be if you experience any unexplained weight loss or chest pain symptoms.
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be easily treated, yet less than 40% of people seek medical care. A podiatrist can help control this condition by prescribing special antiperspirants, prescription creams and wipes, nerve-blocking medications, Iontophoresis, and/or Botox injections, Parthasarathy says.
Sock Type: Crew | Material: Recycled polyester, nylon, lycra spandex | Size Range: Small to extra-large
Sweat can start smelling when it mixes with bacteria that thrive in moist, warm, dark environments (like socks). If you struggle with sweat-related foot odor, Patagonia’s Ultralightweight Performance ¾ Crew Socks are ideal for odor control because of their moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating abilities, which help reduce some contributing factors that can lead to stinky feet.
When we wore them, the recycled polyester, nylon, and spandex blend helped keep us cool and fresh, while the larger weave allowed maximum airflow and breathability. Sweat didn’t get trapped inside the sock, and while our feet were still a little damp, we noticed significantly less moisture build-up. Most importantly, we smelled no unfortunate odors when we took them off.
The snug fit was also impressive. They stretched in all the right spots without any bunching and were comfortable all day long. We also liked the high toe seams, mild arch support and the fact that they felt lighter than the average sock. Though we think they’re a little too thick to wear while running, they’re perfect for hiking and cycling.
These socks weren’t the most durable pair. We air-dried them and were disappointed to see them fray on the bottom of the heels and ankles.
Sock Type: Ankle | Material: Polyester, nylon, spandex | Size Range: Small to extra-large
The warmer the weather, the more your body may sweat to regulate your temperature. Feetures Men’s High Performance Ultra Light ankle socks are lightweight and thin, ideal for hotter weather and climates. Our feet could breathe easily during testing, staying cool and dry on our sweatiest days.
They’re constructed with polyester, nylon, and spandex blend, and even though they’re thinner than other socks we tried, they proved to be durable and well-made. They were ideal workout socks. Whether we were in the gym or running, they never bunched or slid and kept moisture and heat at bay.
With these socks, you’ll sacrifice cushioning for thinness. Anyone who prefers a cushioned sock may not enjoy this pick. Still, as previously mentioned, Lobkova prefers thinner socks for patients with sweaty feet because extra cushion can produce more heat.
Sock Type: No show | Material: Polyester, elastane | Size Range: Women’s 6-14, men’s 7-13
The Unisex UA ArmourDry Run Lite No Show Tab Socks offer as much protection from sweaty, smelly feet as they do value. During testing, the moisture-wicking fabric kept our feet refreshingly cool whether we were casually running errands or at our sweatiest in the gym. We loved that we didn’t have to switch socks out between activities. They were versatile, breathable, and comfortable enough to keep on as we transitioned from casual lounging to intense workout sessions. Throughout it all, we remained odor-free, fresher, and substantially dryer than we were used to.
We also appreciated how well-constructed they were—by the end of testing, they still maintained their initial elasticity. We didn’t notice any pilling or fraying, either. While this isn’t make or break, we were also thoroughly impressed that the white socks stayed white after several uses and washes. They’re available in packs of three in two fun color options and are also made to fit a range of foot sizes.
While we love this pick, no-show socks aren’t for everyone. We also enjoyed Saucony Inferno Quarter Socks if you’re looking for ankle socks. They were heel-spur friendly, comfy, breathable and worked well as running socks, but they did bunch around the heel. However, if you prefer crew socks, Fits Casual Crew Socks also kept us odor-free and dry when we wore them. They struck the perfect balance between comfort and support. That being said, they were too restrictive around our calves.
These socks may not be the best for smaller shoe sizes as they ran a little large on smaller feet during testing.
Sock Type: Crew | Material: Polyester, nylon, lycra spandex | Size Range: Small to large
Lobkova likes socks from Darn Tough for sweaty feet, and their Coolmax Socks are designed with hikers in mind. Hikers will appreciate that their design prioritizes comfort and fit to help keep feet dry and blister-free during long trail sessions.
The moisture-wicking polyester, nylon, and spandex blend stretches and conforms to the foot, so there’s no rubbing or sliding when walking. We loved that they stayed taut throughout use and never bunched or slipped, even on days when we walked upwards of 11 miles. The fabric also kept our feet completely dry (even after stepping directly into a puddle) and felt incredibly cozy. Traveling short and long distances on foot was equally enjoyable and easy, and there were no unpleasant odors when we removed them, either.
They’re not the most stylish option and are only available in one non-neutral colorway.
Sock Type: No show | Material: Mesh | Size Range: Small to large
A trusted brand for high-performance athletic wear, lululemon and its MacroPillow Tab Running Socks don’t disappoint. The stretchy mesh is treated with Zinc to prevent and reduce odor-causing bacteria. We liked that they're soft and breathable, and we loved that the individual left and right socks were labeled so the seams were never out of place. Once they were on, they fit like a glove and didn’t bunch or slip.
For marathons, you traditionally size up your sneakers by a half to a full size because your feet tend to swell. At the same time, you’re actively running—so you don’t want a sock that ends up being too thick so that it takes up extra space in your shoe, says Muller. Thankfully, these lululemon socks were thin enough to give us extra wiggle room. They kept our feet cool, minimized moisture buildup, and helped reduce swelling. We also liked that they retained their shape and elasticity after numerous uses and washes and are just as cozy as our first use.
While we love the quality and believe they’re worth every penny, we know they might be a splurge for some. A more wallet-friendly option is the Bombas Performance Running Quarter Sock. While the sticker price may be in the same range, you get three more high-performance running socks. They are soft, cushiony, and comfortable, and our feet never felt sweaty, itchy, or wet when we wore them. We just wish they were a little more breathable.
They’re not the most budget-friendly option available.
Sock Type: Ankle | Material: Polyester, spandex, nylon, elastane | Size Range: Women’s 5-11
According to Connor, an ideal sock for people with sweaty feet and plantar fasciitis should have proper cushioning and fabric that wicks away sweat well. Bering’s Performance Athletic Running Socks have both of these features, plus extra cushioning and supportive ribbing. Our editor with plantar fasciitis found that wearing this pick made a big difference in her hurt foot.
The design is impeccable, too. The impressive airflow and ventilation kept our feet fresh, dry and odor-free (even after four-mile walks and full days of errands). They fit us perfectly and stayed in place throughout use without discomfort or irritation. We loved that the polyester, spandex, nylon, and elastane blend felt soft and cozy while durable and tough. After multiple uses and washes, they stayed perfectly intact, and the reinforced toe and heel prevented damage like thinning and holes. They are also true to size. Suffice it to say, they quickly became one of our favorite socks in our sock drawer.
This pick may be too thick for some people.

Connor suggests the following for treating and preventing sweaty feet:
Lobkova also recommends using talc-free foot powder before putting on socks and sanitizing shoes that aren’t washing machine-compatible with UV-light shoe sterilizers. These should dry out the inside of the shoe to reduce bacterial growth, viruses, and fungi.
To help us nail down the best socks for sweaty feet, we asked experts to explain which materials work best to wick away sweat and what to look for in a sock that will keep your feet dry. The experts we spoke to include:
Brittany Johnson is a staff writer at Verywell Health who covers health and beauty. Living with flat feet and slight bunions, she prioritizes footwear that is as healthy and comfortable as it is stylish. She prefers white, no-show socks with tab pulls and ample cushioning. Our best everyday pick is next on her list to try.
April Benshosan is an experienced health journalist and editor whose work highlights her passion for helping readers make informed decisions about their health. She lives an active lifestyle and is an avid weight-lifter who has put multiple pairs of socks to the test. She personally avoids 100% cotton socks when she works out and prefers a pair that has some nylon and elastane as well as a cushioned footbed and blister tab for support.
Nicole Crawford has been writing articles on health, nutrition, and fitness for over a decade. She runs four days a week and is pretty picky about her socks. She also has six active kids who could definitely use some assistance in the sweaty feet department. (They might have gotten it from her side of the family, but she would never admit that on the internet.) Her favorite socks on this list are the Saucony Performance Tab Socks, which have become a staple item in her household—especially during cross-country season.
