Alro Steel has officially announced the opening of its new location at 9620 Earhart Lane SW in Cedar Rapids.

The 197,000-square-foot, custom-built metals service center allows Alro to provide customers throughout Iowa with cut-to-size metals and next-day delivery, according to a news release.
The Cedar Rapids location has storage space for a wide range of metals including carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys, aluminum, red metals, and more. Shapes include bar, sheet, plate, pipe, tube, and large structural shapes.
The facility has multiple saws for bar, structural and precision cutting, with quick access to a wide variety of additional processing services such as plate and tube laser, plasma cutting, waterjet cutting and more. The Cedar Rapids facility can also warehouse special inventory programs.
The Michigan-based company announced plans in November 2021 for the $20 million office, warehouse and distribution facility. At the time, company officials said the facility would bring an estimated 40 new jobs to the market.
The Cedar Rapids City Council approved a package of financial incentives for the Alro Steel project, including a standard 10-year, 50% rebate of increased property taxes generated by the development. The project is expected to generate $5.2 million in taxes over a 10-year period, with $1.9 million of that amount being rebated to the company, according to city documents.
The project also qualifies under the city’s high-quality jobs program, based on the creation of 10 or more jobs at or above Iowa’s High Quality Jobs threshold of $24.20 per hour.
The new facility is the first in Iowa for Alro Steel and was developed by Chicago-based LG Development Corp. and FH Development of Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Glick said Alro Steel can typically deliver within a three-hour radius of the Cedar Rapids facility, and “can accommodate longer deliveries after additional discussion.”

Alro is focused on offering cut-to-size metals and plastics with next-day delivery to over 50,000 customers in North America. Alro operates over 80 locations in 16 states, with 3,600 employees company-wide, and provides a broad inventory of products under company operating divisions including Alro Steel, Alro Metals, Alro Metals Outlet, and Alro Plastics.
