For pregnant runners, having the right amount of support around the bump is vital for staying active and comfortable. A good maternity belt or band can make all the difference, particularly as your baby grows and your centre of gravity shifts.

Many women suffer lower back pain when pregnant and a belly band can help to relieve the pressure as well as reduce bounce whilst walking, jogging or running.

Maternity belts can also help to support the uterus and reduce discomfort during exercise as well encourage a correct posture, making movement more comfortable.

Keeping active during pregnancy is highly recommended for both mother and baby's health and if you are already a runner there is no reason to stop, unless you have a complication such as severe pre-eclampsia or pre-existing heart disease.

If you are looking to continue running while pregnant then a maternity support band can help to take some of the strain and keep you active for longer. Just make sure to seek medical advice before using any compression gear which may restrict blood flow. And only wear a band for a few hours at a time rather than becoming reliant on it.

This lightweight elastic belt has won multiple awards in the US thanks to its excellent abdominal support and flexibility. It comes in a range of sizes from small to XX large but also has adjustable straps on both sides so can be used throughout your pregnancy and postpartum.

The medium support offers the right compression in the lower back and hips for running and it also has a handy back pocket to insert hot or cold pads for additional relief, although in reality many women use this as pocket to stash their phone.

This simple one-size nude strap can be adjusted at the front and back and is a real winner for pregnant women wanting to relieve lower back pain and pelvic girdle pain as their bump grows bigger. Although not designed specifically for exercise lots of runners recommended this product finding it gave great support during weekly parkruns. Being machine washable was an added bonus, particularly after a sweaty run.

This John Lewis belt which comes in black and white and four different sizes was a firm favourite with smaller framed runners. Described as soft and cool even in hot weather, the four way stretch provides adequate support around the bump whilst running. Some users did complain that it rolled up but if you manage to get the right fit it should fit like a bump glove.

This product has a different design to the brand's other bands because it has been made specifically for exercise during pregnancy. It is shaped to prevent it from rolling down and has a moisture wicking finish meaning it will dry quickly in the rain or on hot sweaty days.

This is a good value for money option which provides decent lower back support. It is also lightweight and seamless meaning it is comfortable to wear beneath a running top or maternity vest. Available in small, medium and large.

Although not technically a support belt, this maternity top has a built-in band which is designed to significantly reduce bounce during exercise. Created for higher intensity workouts, the band supports your hips, bump and pelvis whilst the side and back mesh panels help to keep you cool along with the sweat-wicking easy dry material.

Runners loved the comfort and ease of the all-in-one top and band which they felt was worth the higher price tag. Available in five sizes and pink or black colouring.
