You Can Replace Patio Sliders With Bifold Doors (But Is It Worth The Cost?)

Sliding doors are a classic option for patio entryways; they're like a giant window that leads to gorgeous views and better curb appeal. However, if you're all about creating an open atmosphere and bringing the outdoors in, then upgrading the sliders to bifold doors might be your preferred option. In an exclusive House Digest interview, we spoke to Matt DiBara, a fourth-generation contractor and co-founder of The Contractor Consultants, to find out if this replacement is worth the labor and cost. With both options being stylish patio doors that offer a clear view and easy access to the courtyard, it all boils down to what you prioritize most for your home, according to DiBara.

"It is absolutely possible to replace patio sliding doors with bi-fold doors," DiBara said. "Bi-fold patio doors are made up of several sections that fold and stack to one side, allowing a full opening to the outside area." That's the main difference between the two doors, whereas sliders open horizontally and always have a fixed panel in place. While there are aesthetic advantages to bifold doors, they cost thousands of dollars to install. It can be a great investment for your home, but there are a few things to consider before replacing your sliding doors, especially if they're still in good condition. folding sliding doors interior

"Sliding door replacements with folding systems range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on door size, door material involved, and the amount of structural change required," Matt DiBara exclusively told House Digest. The price of the project can greatly increase if you want a high-end door or any structural work, like expanding the opening or adding support beams, is needed. Upgrading to bifolds can be an expensive renovation, especially if your current sliding doors are in good condition and the replacement serves more as an aesthetic benefit than a functional one.

Further, even if following the method for the easiest way to install bifold doors, this isn't a beginner-friendly project. "A very experienced do-it-yourselfer can install it, but professional installation is recommended to make sure proper alignment and structural integrity are met," DiBara said. So, it's very unlikely you'll be able to cut the cost of labor by taking on the project yourself. Still, considering it's a one-time purchase that should stand the test of time, bifold doors can be a great long-term investment that instantly elevates your home.

"Bi-fold doors provide a wide, unobstructed view and seamless indoor-outdoor connectivity, making a home feel larger and more integrated with nature," Matt DiBara exclusively told House Digest. It's like the feeling when you draw the curtains and the sunlight washes the room. Only now with bifold doors, fresh air, the smell of morning dew, and the sound of early birds follow. It expands the interior creating a flexible living space and that seamless transition also helps to turn your patio into the ultimate outdoor entertainment space.

Not to mention, bifold doors are gorgeous and have a high-end feel. "They also add to the aesthetic appeal with many sleek, modern designs and allow more natural light than typical sliding doors," DiBara said. More sunlight is always a plus for enhancing the interior design of a space and boosting a positive mood.

However, if you don't need the seamless transition and won't take advantage of the parted glass, traditional sliding doors will do the job just fine, and you probably don't need to spend thousands to replace them.
