The City of Melbourne starts work next Wednesday in the first of a series of security bollard installations in the Southern Cross Station precinct.
Over the coming months the City will be installing stainless steel bollards and other security measures, and removing the existing concrete blocks. Removable Bollard
Riders will notice activity first at the Bourke Street and Spencer Street intersection.
Temporary fencing and signage will be in place, and one pedestrian crossing across Spencer Street will be closed.
One north-bound traffic lane on Spencer Street between Little Collins and Bourke streets will be closed and there will be no right-hand turn permitted from Spencer Street into Bourke Street.
One taxi rank and one accessible parking bay on Spencer Street will be closed.
The change will be in place for about six weeks.
This would normally be a hectic situation, but during this time train passenger traffic is well down and there are fewer cars on the road.
The upgrades will feature stainless steel bollards and may also include bespoke barriers and other security enhancements.
The upgrades around the station are being developed by security experts and designers to provide a high level of safety, while preserving the character of the area and balancing the needs of all users, including pedestrians, motorists, cyclists businesses, emergency services and others.
After the whole project is completed there will be improved bike access and safety through the precinct.
The measures are part of a program of security enhancements being delivered by City of Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Government and Victoria Police.
