The head of the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library says work to tag all books, CDs, and DVDs with a small RFID chip is expected to be done by the end of this year. uhf cards

Judy Moore says the initiative – which began with a pilot at the Aberdeen Tiny Library – will allow patrons to borrow things more seamlessly by using automatic book lockers, which will installed in all library branches.

“So much in the same way that people can have pop and chips dispensed through vending machines into library materials. We have that option there,” Moore said.

Moore says people will only need to scan their library cards to open up a book locker – which will eventually be found at all library branches – noting they won’t have to scan each individual item they’re borrowing as well.

“People can simply use their library card and independently pick up their holds at a time that is convenient for them because the tiny library is only open just 16 hours a week at this point,” she said.

Moore also told Radio NL new RFID chips – which are essentially small, thin, squares – make it easier for library materials to be moved across the TNRL, meaning people will be able to get the things they’ve reserved more quickly.

“Part of the effort in preparing for the RFID and affixing of the chip is actually to do a bit of a collections cull so that work is currently underway in all of our locations,” Moore said.

“It just means that we’re going to be pretty careful about not affixing new tags onto materials that we might choose not to have within the library system.”
