A small unassuming store that looks like a tiny library hides an exciting secret behind its built-in bookcase.

Foodies are flocking to the hidden and aptly named Beyond the Bookcase bar that's tucked away behind a humble blue shelf.

A door handle is disguised as a book and when pulled, peels back the shelving to reveal a swanky speakeasy with extravagant cocktails and delicious food.

Beyond the Bookcase is in the happening inner city Sydney suburb of Surry Hills and provides guests with a cosy retreat away from the bustling streets.

Upon entry, visitors are greeted with contemporary-meets-old-school space with exposed dark timber ceiling beams, dimly lit chandeliers and exposed brick walls.

Customers can sit by the upstairs window and watch the world go by as they sip on a cocktail from the unique menu of eclectic drinks some of which come served in a smoking book box.

Fan favourites include the Tiramisu cocktail that comes with a shortbread biscuit and the bar's logo dusted on chocolate on top as well as the Pop Tale served with a side of popcorn.

There is also the Sneaky Lopez shaken with flavours of tequila, chilli, cucumber and lime embellished with a sprinkle of spices for a refreshing kick.

The food is designed to be shared with a variety of small plates and boards to serve two to four people.

Beyond the Bookcase only opened just after the New Year so word is still getting out about the hidden gem but those who have visited have loved their experience

There is a slider board with fries and coleslaw and a choice of three different mini burgers and a taco board with salsa and corn chips and a selection of crab, chicken or beef tacos.

Popular choices also include the tempura battered zucchini flowers, stuffed jalapeno poppers and the sturgeon caviar with mini crumpets and crème fraiche.

'This has to be one of Sydney’s new hot spots. A must-do for locals, out-of-towners and those that want to experience a casual drink with a fine-dining quality,' one five-star review read.

'As soon as that bookcase is open, you are immediately immersed in a warm cosy atmosphere,' another wrote.
