If You Have a Farmhouse Sink, You Need to Read This

Designers have plenty of thoughts.

Recently, we created quite a stir on the House Beautiful Instagram page when we brought up this design debate: is the farmhouse sink dead, as some designers have said? While farmhouse-inspired aesthetics were wildly popular during the 2010s, many elements of the faux-folksy style have not stuck around in this decade. However, farmhouse sinks, which are deep, wide, and have exposed fronts, were cornerstone fixtures of that design style, and we're still seeing them. kitchens with undermount sinks

When we asked our Instagram followers whether or not farmhouse sinks are over, commenters were quick to respond, saying that the sinks are "timeless," "classic," and "trend-proof," especially since they’ve already been around for centuries. So, we decided to take it to top designers to get their take on this controversial debate. How beloved is the farmhouse sink, really?

First of all, Jenna Schnabel Wedemeyer, principal of Schnabel Interiors, continues to install farmhouse sinks for many of her clients. She says, “Like fashion trends, everything that is old eventually is new again. A classic will always endure. We are confident farmhouse sinks will never lose their place in more rustic and casual kitchen scenarios.”

Schnabel Wedemeyer points out that kitchens with wood cabinets and accents have been growing in popularity, and farmhouse sinks look right at home in kitchens like these.

Kristin Kostamo-McNeil, Owner and Principal of Anne Rae Design, is in full agreement with Schnabel Wedemeyer: farmhouse sinks aren’t going out of style in the foreseeable future.

“We believe the farmhouse sink will always have a place in kitchen design. With origins in England and Ireland, these timeless designs date back hundreds of years, making them a classic mainstay,” she says, adding that her firm has incorporated farmhouse sinks in the majority of their projects, often choosing artisan-made fireclay material for its “handcrafted beauty.”

Additionally, Shelby Van Daley, Owner of Daley Home, believes that farmhouse sinks are “very much not a trend and won't be going away anytime soon.” Van Daley has always felt that there is a time and a place for this style of sink, “for someone who wants traditional, classic, and a little charm.”

Design trends tend to come and go so easily (we’re looking at you, millennial pink and all-white kitchens) that it’s only natural to imagine that with farmhouse style waning in popularity, the farmhouse sink might go with it. But it looks like this tried-and-true sink of yore continues to have staying power and will remain an interior design darling.

While farmhouse sinks are decidedly timeless, let’s say that you do want to embrace the trends as you consider a refresh for your kitchen. As Kostamo-McNeil notes, stainless steel undermount sinks with integrated accessory options have become increasingly popular. And if you do love the look of a farmhouse sink but desire a more modern version of it, look no further than stainless steel or granite composite farmhouse sinks, says Schnabel Wedemeyer.
