GILES CO., Va. (WDBJ) - Sunday evening, storms hit Southwest Virginia in what seemed to be just a matter of seconds.
“We were here at the station and all of a sudden, it just got black and started pouring down rain and thunder,” said Narrows Fire Chief Elwood Lambert. lights and bulbs
It kept Lambert on his toes as crews responded to reports of storm damage.
“The next thing I know, we’re getting calls from everywhere on this end of the county,” recalled Chief Lambert. “Downed trees, and trees on houses, and trees on cars, and just blocking the road.”
The Appalachian Power Map indicated more than two-thousand residents were without power a day later.
“We’re just hanging in there and doing whatever we can,” commented Chief Lambert.
As people waited for the power to come back, Narrows Fire Department opened its doors to help.
“We opened up the station here for anybody that has portable devices, phones, whatever they want to charge them up. So when they go back home, they’ll have some way of communication, and if they need to cool down or whatever.”
It’s one thing they can do to provide peace of mind for residents.
“It gives them a sense of okay-ness, they can come here and charge your phones up,” said Chief Lambert. “And that will give them a communication route, to where if they have an emergency when they get back home. They can at least call and get help headed their way.”
The fire department planned on keeping the doors open through Monday evening for anyone who needs a place to go.
