BASF & Wiskind Unveil ISCC PLUS Certified Biomass Balance Polyurethane Cold Storage Panels

BASF and Shandong Wiskind Architectural Steel Co., Ltd. have strengthened their strategic partnership by launching eco-friendly polyurethane (PU) sandwich panels designed specifically for cold chain applications. Wiskind, recognized as Asia’s pioneer ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certified PU sandwich panel manufacturer, will unveil its PU sandwich panel crafted with BASF's Biomass Balance (BMB) MDI at CHINAPLAS 2024.

Xu Shuheng, General Manager of Wiskind, expressed pride in being the inaugural company to fabricate ISCC PLUS certified PU sandwich panels in the Asia Pacific region, citing BASF's BMB solutions as pivotal in achieving sustainability objectives and enhancing market competitiveness. Shuheng emphasized the strategic importance of BASF's expertise in materials, particularly PU insulation solutions, in enabling the continued collaborative development of innovative and sustainable products. MDI, a core ingredient in PU production, traditionally derives from fossil-based raw materials. However, BASF's BMB solutions enable the substitution of 100% of fossil-based organic materials required for production with sustainably sourced and certified renewable feedstock throughout the production chain. Consequently, the product carbon footprint (PCF) for customers across the value chain is substantially reduced compared to conventional MDI derived from traditional feedstock.

Moreover, utilizing certified renewable raw materials from BASF ensures equivalent product quality and properties to fossil-based alternatives. These PU sandwich panels maintain superior insulation properties akin to conventional variants, contributing to energy conservation, food preservation, and reduction of food wastage. Furthermore, the PU sandwich panels uphold exceptional temperature stability and achieve a higher fire rating compliant with China's stringent fire safety regulations for B1 core foam.

Silvia Mok, Vice President of Performance Materials Asia Pacific at BASF, highlighted the collaborative effort between Wiskind and BASF to address market demands for sustainable solutions. Mok emphasized the successful launch of the first cold storage sandwich panels featuring lower carbon footprint materials derived from biomass balanced raw materials. This milestone, Mok noted, underscores BASF's material solutions and competencies in supporting customers to overcome emerging challenges in demanding applications.

The partnership between Wiskind and BASF commenced in 2017, culminating in a strategic alliance in 2019 to explore diverse applications of PU sandwich panels and identify opportunities for joint marketing efforts. During CHINAPLAS 2024, BASF will exhibit its most recent innovations, capabilities, and advancements, emphasizing sustainability and collaborative creation initiatives.

BASF pioneers chemistry for a sustainable tomorrow, blending financial prosperity with environmental stewardship and societal accountability. With approximately 112,000 employees worldwide, BASF Group members play a pivotal role in supporting customers across a wide array of industries and geographic regions. BASF's diverse portfolio spans six key segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions.
