Based out of Southern California, Gunther Werx is an elite Porsche tuning shop founded and headed up by noted builder and tuner, Peter Nam. And though its inception was only in 2017, Gunther Werx has quickly emerged as one of the world’s premier producers of ultra-high-dollar spare-no-expense 911 restomods. And while every automotive creation to leave the Huntington Beach shop is incredibly special, its latest release just might be its most noteworthy to date. Further cementing its status as a world leader in the 911 restomod space, Gunther Werx has just pulled the cover off of its all-new GWR.
At the heart of the GWR is a naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine. This isn’t your average flat-six, however, as this power plant was co-developed by none other than Rothsport, we’ve developed our groundbreaking 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine that redefines performance. Fitted with some of the finest internals that money can buy, the flat-six sports a quad-cam, twin-valve design and now features an advanced Slide Valve Throttle Body System, a new intake manifold, and titanium valvetrain components.
The engine comes bolted to a re-engineered Getrag G50 manual transmission that benefits from custom gear ratios, an upgraded shift linkage, a single-mass mid-weight flywheel, and a new lower-ratio limited-slip differential complete with carbon clutches.
Thanks to its top-shelf internals and some clever tuning, the GWR’s engine manages to crank out an impressive 500hp and 340ft-lbs of torque. The vehicle makes the most of these figures with an ultra-svelte curb weight of just 2,400lbs — making it roughly the same weight as a Miata while making nearly 2.5-times as much power. Gunther Werx hasn’t cited top speed or 0-60mph times, but you can rest assured that they’re supercar-grade through and through.
Based on the existing 993 design, the GWR sports a custom-designed set of widebody-style bodywork complete with a bespoke aero kit. This includes massively flared fenders at all four corners, a front splitter sitting beneath a pair of intake scoops, custom GT3-style mirrors, an integrated ducktail spoiler, and a custom diffuser housing the restomod’s centrally-exiting dual-muffler exhaust setup. The entire set of bodywork is crafted from carbon fiber, too, with the weave left on display in some eras.
Fortified via an integrated roll cage, the GWR’s cabin features carbon-backed seats with custom Alcantara upholstery, exposed carbon fiber dash and door panels, n Alcantara-clad steering wheel, a rear seat delete, a custom shift knob, and a wireless smartphone charger. All in all, it does a phenomenal job of marrying modern luxury vehicle interior design with that of gutted race car cabins.
Every element and inch of the GWR has been closely considered. Take, for instance, the vehicle’s headlights. Custom-made from a combination of T-6061 aluminum and carbon fiber, these bespoke Bi-LED projectors feature active daytime running lights and an aerospace-grade glass housing that’s been polished by hand. What’s more, the entire vehicle rides on a set of lightweight forged five-arm center-locking wheels sitting beneath turbo fan covers with aero fins that help to cool the underlying brakes. Even the GWR’s key is a completely bespoke item with a motif that matches the interior’s carbon fiber structural bracing.
Like all Gunther Werx projects, the GWR epitomizes what it means for a vehicle to be built with a spare-no-expense approach. Its level of attention to detail is unparalleled, and its performance is on par with a great many modern-day supercars. Like the interior, the entire vehicle does a stellar job of delivering a luxurious behind-the-wheel experience that’s still incredibly performance-focused. The Rothsport-developed engine, manual gear box, and the analog driving experience it delivers are just the icing on the cake.
