In short: thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. Many people believe that a higher rating always means better quality. However, that's not always the case. While thread count does provide a general idea of quality, it's important to consider personal preference when selecting bed sheets. Factors like fabric type, weave, and individual comfort play a significant role.
Depending on what type of sleeper you are, the thread count that is best-suited to you will vary. Hot, prone-to-sweat sleepers could benefit from lower counts that feel lighter to sleep on but if you’re sensitive to cold, the solution lies in a denser alternative that will keep you toasty. A fail-safe option would be opting for sheets with counts between 300 to 800.
“Middle to high-range thread counts are often best for a comfortable and breathable night’s rest,” says Farah Arshad, Head of Product at Dusk. That being said, when shopping exclusively for Egyptian cotton bedding, we'd steer clear of anything below a 300 thread count, as these sheets have a slightly coarse texture that can feel scratchy.
Pure cotton bed linen is best known for its naturally soft and cool finish which makes it one of the most popular fabrics to sleep in. Egyptian cotton bedding boasts similar qualities, but is crafted exclusively from cotton fibres cultivated in Egypt, which possess longer staple lengths compared to regular cotton.
“Egyptian cotton is technically regarded a more superior yarn, so it could be classed as a more superior product, however, there are a number of factors that play into what makes quality bed linen,” says Farah. “The key attributes to look for are that the bedding you choose is made from natural fibres that support breathability, allowing air flow and something that aids temperature regulation,” she adds.
“Egyptian cotton is also more breathable, moisture-wicking and absorbent than regular cotton, so not only does it help with temperature regulation during summer, during cooler months the fabric also works with your duvet to trap body heat, relaying it back to you,” Farah says.
