Lanes still closed, engineer report reviewed after building facade falls into Kaukauna road

KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WBAY) - Following a notification from WisDOT that said the road was cleared Friday, WisDOT sent another notification a few minutes later that the lanes are still closed.

Southbound traffic will take Island/Catherine Street to Dodge Street. There is still a full closure on Highway 55 southbound from Wisconsin Avenue to Catherine Street due to a building collapse. Curtain Wall Facade

The city of Kaukauna is working with the owner of the Galleria of Tile, the building whose facade collapsed.

While officials are working to reopen the road, power is still out and those living and working there have been advised not to return until further notice.

Mayor Tony Penterman says he received a report from the city’s structural engineer and will be reviewing the findings.

Depending on the building’s structural integrity, the report will determine if it needs to be torn down.

After the incident, inspectors will now survey older buildings throughout the city to check on their structural integrity.

“It’s tough for the person that’s displaced from this and that’s why we want to get this opened up and fixed as soon as possible,” said Mayor Penterman. “Hopefully get this business back up because they’re not making money right now. So we just want to get it all cleaned up and hopefully, the building can stay standing.”

PREVIOUS: Highway 55 in Kaukauna from Taylor Street to Wisconsin Avenue is closed until further notice because part of a building’s facade has fallen into the roadway.

Bricks from the top of the Galleria of Tile, located at 319 Lawe Street in Kaukauna, fell off the front of the building and onto the road.

According to the City of Kaukauna on Facebook, the road will be closed until further notice.

According to authorities, the reports started coming in around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Nobody was injured, but one family has been displaced and is working with the Red Cross to find a place to stay until it is fixed. The cause is unclear, but the age of the building is considered to be a factor, and there is the possibility of more bricks falling from the building.

“We don’t know what happened. I don’t know if a car hit the building, or if the bricks just fell. We are just grateful that no one was injured. No one was walking past. There were no vehicles on this very very busy road,” said Andrew Kurland, a resident of the residence upstairs, and Amanda Septimo, the owner of the Galleria of Tile.

An Action 2 News crew on the scene spoke with Kaukauna Mayor Tony Penterman, who said that parts of the roads near the building will be closed until an engineer can get out to the scene and evaluate the situation on Monday.

We will bring you any updates as they are made available to us.
