Steel plates cover West Nashville road for months

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Construction in a West Nashville neighborhood has torn up the road and replaced it with more than a dozen steel plates that have been there for months.

People who live along Robertson Avenue said they are fed up with the constant metal banging sound that has been coming from the block between Sterling Street and Ethel Street since work at a housing construction site began in November. Hot Rolled Steel Coil Production Line

Connie Overbey said it’s very loud and has kept her from spending time outside or opening her windows. She called the large steel plates a safety issue that has impacted the whole community.

“It’s a busy road,” Overbey said. “I am used to it being noisy, but this should’ve been fixed or dealt with long before now. Here we are six months later. The plates come apart from all the traffic up and down Robertson.”

Beyond the noise, the plates are creating a traffic nightmare for people in the area. Rachel Serrato said it’s impossible to turn off her road with people slowing down to go over the bumps. Her son even blew out a tire going over the metal that’s constantly bending under cars.

“I don’t even know why they have the road dug up as big as it is,” Serrato said. “I do know that at some points it shifts, the metal plates will shift and there is a hole there. That is also a potential hazard and a dangerous problem.”

NDOT said placement and timing of steel plates varies based on the individual project. Permit inspectors enforce the regulations and check to make sure the plates are safe and secure on the road.

For this project, an NDOT spokesperson said the contractor has been dealing with weather delays and issues with the plumbing contractor. Due to the number of cars that rely on Robertson Avenue, they are only able to close the road on weekends.

“The general contractor has secured a new plumbing contractor to complete the water line work next weekend (April 13 and 14), weather dependent,” the NDOT spokesperson said. “Once the work is complete, the steel plates will be removed, and the roadway will be patched.”

People who live and drive in the area told WSMV4 they are very excited for the road to get back to normal.
