Nothing adds a bit of luxury to a kitchen like a massive French-door refrigerator. There’s something majestic about opening up those double doors and having more than enough room for whatever giant casserole dish or whole turkey you want to store.
Besides boasting extraordinary interior space, French-door fridges often offer a number of highly desirable features. If you want a water dispenser, ice maker, or a high-end finish, you’re more likely to find those features on a French-door. They also tend to have a larger chassis, which provides more room for compressors and superior airflow.
While the best French-door refrigerators cost more than their side-by-side and top-freezer counterparts, the user satisfaction that comes with a French-door refrigerator is typically worth the higher price tag.

The Frigidaire Gallery Quattro GRQC2255BF 4-door French-door is currently the best fridge we've tested—French-door or otherwise.
This fridge has some of the best temperature control we've seen to date, keeping variance to below 1°F of its target. That means temperatures won't wobble over time and there are no warm spots in its compartments. This is likely due to the fridge's TwinTech cooling system, which allows the GRQC2255BF to quickly notice any changes in temperature and adjust accordingly. This is the most solid temperature performance we've seen in our labs.
This 4-door fridge also comes packed with helpful extra features, like a custom-temperature compartment, through-the-door ice and water dispenser, and its SpaceWise organization system lets you easily customize where everything is stored.
The cherry on top is that the GRQC2255BF is also available at a great price for what it offers, making it an excellent value on top of its other accolades.

Tons of great extra features
The Bosch 500 Series B36CD50SNS has near-perfect performance.
It passed all our tests with flying colors, offering consistent temperatures in both the fridge and freezer. It also has useful features like a through-the-door dispenser for ice and water, and smart connectivity that allows for remote operation and notifications.
While the B36CD50SNS lacks a spill-capture lip on its fridge shelves and has slightly less than average storage capacity, it’s still one of our top-rated refrigerators of all time.

Less storage space than average
The Bosch B36FD50SNS boasts outstanding performance, stellar features, and Bosch’s excellent warranty.
During testing, temperature control was nearly perfect—temperatures in both the fridge and freezer were ideal, and remained consistent over time. The B36FD50SNS, which is Energy Star certified, maintains these temperatures while using less electricity than most other refrigerators.
We love that you can monitor temperatures via an app you can download to your smartphone. This app also allows you to check the temperature and humidity in the crispers, which perform better than most others we’ve tested.
The B36FD50SNS also has impressive storage, with 13% more usable space than the average fridge and nearly 5% more in the freezer. To put that in perspective, that equates to six extra basketballs in the fridge and nearly one basketball in the freezer.
This fridge has a sleek, stainless steel finish and a through-the-door ice and water dispenser, but one thing we didn’t like was that its fridge shelves only have spill-capture lips in the front.
While this fridge costs more than the average French-door refrigerator, we think it’s a good value and worth its purchase price.

If you've been looking for a counter-depth French-door at a good price that doesn't skimp on storage, the Frigidaire Gallery GRMC2273CF French-door fridge may be the pick for you.
While the GRMC2273CF does feature a counter-depth design (which is less deep than full-size builds, resulting in lower overall storage), it manages to use the space it does have incredibly well, with more fridge storage space than even some full-size models.
The GRMC2273CF also provides some excellent customization features to make sure that space conforms to your specific needs. It has sliding door bins and folding shelves that can move to make way for taller objects stored underneath, a storage area at kid-height called the Snack Zone, and a custom-temperature drawer that can be set anywhere from freezing to 45°F for chilling wine.
The GRMC2273CF excels in most other areas as well. Modern Frigidaire fridges are using a new air circulation technology, the TwinTech cooling system, which keeps temperatures consistent throughout its compartments as well as over time.

Lots of highly-customizable storage space
A few fixtures feel cumbersome to use
The Samsung Bespoke RF29BB8600AP, which has a slew of available customization options, offers unique looks and great performance.
During testing, temperatures in the fridge were ideal and consistent. They also didn’t vary from one spot in the fridge to another. While there were a couple temperature spikes in the freezer during testing, overall, temperatures remained steady.
To help prevent cold air escaping from the fridge, the RF29BB8600AP has a door-in-door design that provides easy access to your door bins. This fridge also has a flex drawer for adaptable storage.
With a list of finishes to choose from in either glass or steel, the RF29BB8600AP is a great way to place a custom look in your kitchen. And while it may be expensive compared to more basic refrigerators, the RF29BB8600AP is actually one of the cheaper ways to get this sort of customization.

The custom-color panels are a separate purchase
The Midea MRQ22D7AST has a stylish aesthetic, helpful features, and maintains steady temperatures—everything you want in a French-door.
While the most charming detail of the Midea MRQ22D7AST is its deli net, it also has a full-width, pull-out drawer and ample storage throughout. And all those extra perishables you have room for will get a maximized shelf life from this fridge's amazing temperature regulation.
You do pay a premium for some of the features and its overall aesthetic, but it helps that this fridge also has solid fundamental performance as well. If you like the look of this fridge and its unique storage layout, it's a great buy.

Crisper settings can be confusing
The GE Café CVE28DM5NS5 has everything you would expect from a premium refrigerator. Featuring a platinum glass finish, shelves with rose gold accents, and backlit LED lights in the fridge, it’s a statement piece for the kitchen.
The CVE28DM5NS5 has more than just looks, though. Both the fridge and freezer excel at temperature control. The crisper drawer does a great job of controlling humidity, and there are a number of flexible storage options, including a flex drawer that has its own temperature controls.
This refrigerator takes its through-the-door dispenser to the next level with its Autofill, which senses the height of your water container as water is dispensed and stops when it’s full. It then reports how much water was dispensed.
There were some things about the CVE28DM5NS5 that we didn’t like as much. While the freezer has more usable space than an average French-door model, the fridge does not, the cost of a great dispenser. Also, energy costs are slightly higher than average.
Yes, this refrigerator is expensive, but if you have a big budget, you’ll appreciate the looks and the utility of the CVE28DM5NS5.

The GE Profile PVD28BYNFS will be right at home in any high-end kitchen.
The PVD28BYNFS, which has a fingerprint-resistant finish, excels at form and function. The backlit fridge interior raises the aesthetic quality while also making it easier to find food. In addition to flexible shelving options, the fridge’s door-in-door design allows bins to rotate outward. The PVD28BYNFS also has an auto-sensing water dispenser and a separate flex drawer with its own temperature controls.
While this fridge performed well in our temperature tests and the crisper drawers are some of the best we’ve ever tested, it has slightly less capacity than other French-door fridges. Also, energy costs are slightly higher than average.
Overall, though, the GE PVD28BYNFS is well worth the money if you have a larger budget.

Flexible drawer with custom temp
The KitchenAid KRFC704FBS stands out for its wood-look finish material, which is moisture- and stain-resistant, and metal trim on the interior shelves and drawers.
This refrigerator isn’t just about style, though. During testing, the temperature in the fridge was close to ideal and consistent over time. The freezer did well during testing, as well, with temperatures below 0°F.
This refrigerator also has a retractable middle shelf in the fridge that makes room for taller items, soft-close drawers, and intuitive controls.
People with a bigger budget who are looking for something different than a white plastic interior will likely love this KitchenAid fridge.

The GE GNE25JMKES has clean lines and a sleek exterior, featuring a discreet interior water dispenser and internal ice-maker instead of through-the-door dispensers.
A well-priced French-door refrigerator, the GNE25JMKES has quite a few features, including retractable shelves to store taller items in the fridge and custom-temperature deli drawer. The interior of the fridge also is well-lit and has big bins on the doors.
While the GNE25JMKES did well on our temperature tests—the fridge was able to maintain safe temperatures and the freezer temperature was consistent—its ability to maintain humidity was a concern: the produce drawers lost water faster than others we tested.
While it looks like a basic French-door, we like the GE GNE25JMKES because it includes some of the most convenient features that you typically only find on more expensive options.

The Bosch’s 800 Series B36CT80SNS excels at temperature control, but the freezer capacity is low, nearly half that of the average French-door refrigerator.
Although the freezer is small, it is well-organized, giving users more flexibility by including a third tier of drawers. The fridge has lots of storage space, over 20% more than the average French-door fridge.
The B36CT80SNS passed all of our performance tests, maintaining cold, consistent temperatures in the fridge and freezer. With customizable temperatures in the fridge’s crispers, your fruit and vegetables will also stay fresh longer.
We also like its smart capabilities via Home Connect, which can be used to control temperatures in the fridge, adjust lighting, and run diagnostics. Home Connect also allows you to get a notification on your smartphone or tablet if the doors aren’t closed.

The Electrolux ERMC2295AS is a high-end, counter-depth fridge with a clean look and consistent temperatures.
It also delivers solid extras. The through-the-door dispenser is tall enough to accommodate thermoses and large reusable bottles. The flex drawer can quickly adapt to your storage needs, and the crispers can keep your veggies from wilting too quickly.
The ERMC2295AS’s small footprint can also be a benefit for those living in a particularly small space. Of course, the resulting reduced capacity is definitely a downside.

Temperatures in the freezer weren't consistent
Our refrigerator testing lab is a sealed room connected to a system that automatically maintains a constant 70°F temperature and 50% relative humidity, regardless of how hot and dry or cold and wet it may be outside. Keeping environmental factors consistent is extremely important, because variations in temperature and humidity can affect how hard a fridge needs to work.
We evaluate French-door refrigerators on objective and subjective metrics; you can read about our complete testing process for more information. The objective tests allow us to compare performance across models and manufacturers, while the subjective tests give us insight into how easy or difficult it is to use a refrigerator in day-to-day life.
To ensure consistency in our testing, we keep each refrigerator in a climate-controlled chamber that ensures a temperature of 72°F +/- 5°F and a relative humidity of 50% RH +/- 15% RH. Refrigerators have to work harder if the air surrounding them is extremely hot or cold, so by ensuring stable room temperature conditions we can directly compare fridges without worrying about the weather that particular day.
We spend a week running various tests on the refrigerators, measuring everything from their temperature consistency over time, their humidity levels, and how energy efficient they are. We also hand-measure each and every shelf and bin, to ensure a consistent methodology across brands: No counting the empty space around an ice-maker or in the gap between the door and interior shelves.

There are many factors to consider before buying a refrigerator. Beyond budget, style, and kitchen space, you may also want to think about finish, warranty, and special features like smart platforms.
French-door refrigerators have two large doors with handles at the center of the fridge. These open from the center out, much like a side-by-side fridge, but unlike a side-by-side, the French-door opens into the same large, refrigerated compartment.
In most French-door models, the freezer sits beneath the refrigerated compartment, similar in design to what you'd find on a bottom-freezer, and pulls outward like a drawer. Some models have four- or even five-door designs, integrating separate, flexible-temperature compartments into the usual “fridge and freezer” paradigm.
The boon of a French-door fridge over a top-freezer, bottom-freezer, or side-by-side, is its sheer amount of space, as well as premium features like through-the-door dispensers and custom-temperature flex drawers.
When deciding how much to spend on a fridge, know that French-door fridges can be pricey, but they also have the highest ceiling for possible extra features, resulting in a huge range of possible prices.
Most French-doors typically fall into the $2,000-$3,000 range, sometimes running upward of $4,000. We've reviewed excellent, entry-level French-door refrigerators that cost under $1,500 and higher-end, feature-dense models that cost over $5,000.
Special features like through-the-door dispensers, higher-end ice-makers, custom-temperature flex drawers, and smart platforms and built-in touchscreen displays can boost the price.
