The move is in line with the company's broader environmental ambitions.

Bacardi, a family-owned spirits company, has announced that it is reducing the number of cardboard gift boxes used for some of its brands. christmas present box

The latest move is expected to reduce the company’s overall cardboard usage by approximately 100 tons (t) in the first year of the launch alone.

It is in line with the company’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

The change to reduce the number of cardboard gift boxes is being implemented for Bacardi’s own brands, including its Bombay Sapphire gin, Dewar’s White Label Blended Scotch whisky, and Martini sparkling wines.

Bacardi Safety, Quality and Sustainability vice-president Rodolfo Nervi said: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date but we want to go one step further.

“We don’t want to just redesign our packaging to remove plastic, we want to do all we can to reduce our cardboard packaging too.”

According to Bacardi, it uses paper and cardboard for its packaging, which is certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification or the Forest Stewardship Council.

The latest effort builds on Bacardi’s broader ambition, which was announced four years ago, to eliminate 100% of the single-use plastic from its entire gifting range by the end of 2023.

As part of this ambition, Bacardi introduced its single-use plastic-free gift packs in December last year.

The spirits company said that it has already succeeded in eliminating at least 275t of single-use plastic used annually since the launch of this sustainability ambition.

Nervi added: “We are not standing still. We are constantly innovating. For more than 160 years, our iconic brands have reflected the changing tastes of each new generation of consumers.

“Today, consumers want drinks that are made in the most environmentally responsible way possible and so do we.”
