Multi-cooker review: The Instant Pot Rio Wide Multi-Cooker 7.1L

When it comes to the “Paradox of Choice”, this multi-cooker does not apply. Because, while the abundance of options on offer in our streaming services, and supermarkets can sometimes seem overwhelming, in the context of a kitchen device that can deliver a range of cooking options, sometimes it’s a matter of the more the merrier! Especially when the cost of living crisis deems it more essential than ever to invest wisely in multi-functional kitchen appliances. It is for that reason, we were excited to try the Instant Pot Rio Wide Multi-Cooker 7.1L by Instant Brands. Which touts itself as a poly-featured powerhouse in the realm of kitchen appliances. And, after putting it through its paces, we have to admit this new device was worth the hype.

First impressions count, and the Rio Wide’s sleek, modern design certainly makes a statement straight away. The wide inner cooking pot immediately stands out, offering a 35% larger searing surface compared to standard models. This feature translates into practical benefits: easily accommodating larger cuts of meat – like a huge roast chicken or up to three racks of ribs. Making it ideal for families or those who love to entertain. Smart Kitchen Hob

Despite its aesthetic appearance, the build quality is robust. With durable stainless steel and a heavy tri-ply bottom that ensures even heat distribution. This not only enhances cooking performance but also provides better visibility and easier access during the cooking process. The design also incorporates an anti-spin pot mechanism, which simplifies stirring, sauteing, and browning – an excellent addition that streamlines cooking tasks.

On the functionality front, one of our favourite Rio Wide features is its 7-in-1 cooking functions. You can use it to pressure cook, slow cook, steam, saute, make rice, yoghurt, and keep food warm. Plus it also includes 13 customisable smart programs (including meat/stew, poultry, beans/chili, rice, multigrain, soup/broth, and cake) designed to take the guesswork out of meal preparation. Whether you’re in the mood for pressure cooking, slow cooking or steaming this multi-cooker has you covered. A guided cooking indicator adds to the convenience, monitoring progress and ensuring optimal results with minimal effort.

One standout feature is the Easy Release switch, which simplifies the steam release process. This is particularly valuable for safety and ease of use, allowing users to manage pressure release swiftly and confidently.

As a member of a picky family with a wide range of dietary requirements, I can confirm that the Rio Wide performed admirably across a range of dishes. From meaty stews to pretty-plant-based desserts, each meal made was perfectly cooked and flavourful. The ability to switch between cooking modes seamlessly and the intuitive controls further enhance the user experience. Catering to both novice cooks (ahem) and seasoned chefs alike.

While the Rio Wide is undeniably an impressive addition to any kitchen, it’s not without minor considerations. The larger footprint may pose storage challenges for some, and the initial learning curve for mastering all its features might deter those unfamiliar with multi-cookers.

The Instant Pot Rio Wide Multi-Cooker 7.1L, retails for RRP$349 and is available at instantbrands.com.au, Harvey Norman and other leading retailers
